Bidi more harmful than cigarette: Study

In probably the first such large-scale study of its kind, Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, in collaboration with the ministry of health proved that bidis and other forms of tobacco (supari, gutkha, among others) are more harmful than cigarettes. The study had a follow-up period of 5.5 years with as many as 87, 222 male members from Mumbai participating in it. As per the study, the incidence of oral cancer in bidi smokers was 42% higher than in cigarette smokers. For all respiratory and intrathoracic organs combined, the increase was 69%; for lung and larynx, the increases were 35% and 112%, respectively. Smokeless tobacco, on the other hand, was associated with cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, digestive, respiratory, and intrathoracic organs. TANUVAS signs MoU with Japanese institution

Chennai: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) and Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM) at the Madras Veterinary College. The NCRM is a Japanese institute which carries out research, training (both scientists and physicians) on clinical applications-protocol development in regenerative medicine based on cell therapeutics, with emphasis on stem cells, Progenitor cells, precursor cells and autologous cells with regenerative capability and to take them to mass clinical application, while maintaining the highest ethical and scientific values of international standards. Patan (Gujarat): For students of north Gujarat, going to the US for further studies will be easier as a university here on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an American university for academic collaboration. K.K. Shah, vice-chancellor of the Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University (HNGU), and Brian U. Adler, vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) signed the MoU at the Rang Bhavan hall at the HNGU campus, 130 km from Ahmedabad. "Just imparting information is not education in real sense. It needs to be combined in an everlasting process that is noble and spiritually sublime," Adler said quoting Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore while addressing the gathering. JNU inks MoU with two European varsities

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Agreement of Cooperation (AoC) with two universities from Germany and United Kingdom (UK) to accelerate the process of integration of higher education. The AoC was been signed between Axel Freimuth, Rector, Cologne University and JNU Vice-Chancellor, B.B. Bhattacharya on behalf of the Institute of Indology & Tamil Studies of University of Cologne, Germany and JNU's School of Language respectively. New York: Two Indian students in the US are among a group of researchers who have developed ZunaVision, a technology that allows you to view a video and change a still photo inside it. The Stanford University researchers, computer science graduate students Ashutosh Saxena and Siddharth Batra, and assistant professor Andrew Ng, say the technology will have many uses, Science Daily reported. For instance, suppose a favourite video of a birthday party is marred by a small, troubling detail - in it is a photograph of your ex-wife. ZunaVision will allow you to "take down" the photo - and replace it with your current wife's photo. The researchers said the software can place an image on almost any plane surface in a video - it can even insert a video inside a video. Cape Town: India and South Africa need to deepen and harmonise ties in the educational field for mutual benefit, according to Indian High Commissioner Rajiv Bhatia. Bhatia was speaking at an Indian Evening at the University of Western Cape (UWC) here on Friday, when a bust of Mahatma Gandhi was installed in the campus. "The two countries are linked by a bilateral agreement, signed in 2006, on cooperation in the field of education," Bhatia reminded the audience, adding that India had been working closely with the South African government "to manage and deepen our bilateral cooperation in the field of human resource development". IGNOU to launch Appreciation Course on Environment

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced the introduction of an 'Appreciation Course on Environment' from January 2009. The course, with multi-media inputs and developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, aims at creating environmental consciousness among professionals like engineers, doctors, government officials, planers, academicians and all the citizens interested in the cause of environment. The eligibility for admission to the programme is graduation from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification. Two Japanese, US scientist win physics Nobel Prize

Stockholm: Two Japanese and a US scientist shared the 2008 Nobel Prize for physics, according to the prize committee on Tuesday. Yoichiro Nambu, Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa were named for the year's Nobel Laureates in Physics during a press conference at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences here. Japan-born US citizen Yoichiro Nambu of the Enrico Fermi Institute, University of Chicago was awarded "for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics", a press statement said. Makoto Kobayashi of High Energy Accelerator Organisation (KEK) of Tsukuba Japan and Toshihide Maskawa of Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), Kyoto University, Japan were recognised "for the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the existence of at least three families of quarks in nature". New Delhi: With an aim to reform the current scenario of education at all levels, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday announced the setting up of the Rajiv Gandhi Education City at Kundli near Delhi. Addressing the 11th annual convocation ceremony of the New Delhi Institute of Management (NDIM) here, Hooda said the Government would soon pass the Private University Act to encourage private sector investment in higher education. With IGNOU kicking off its first level of mobile services, the facility will be operational within 15 days. Prof. P.V. Shimla: Gender consideration played no part in her historic victory, asserted Shikha Chauhan, the first woman to be elected president of the students' union in Himachal Pradesh University (HPU). Shikha Chauhan of the Left-backed Student Federation of India (SFI) won the president's post of the Students' Central Association on Thursday to become the first woman to be elected to the post in the 30-year history of the state university.
