New Delhi: With an aim to provide university-level education to the many talented deaf and speech-impaired students in developing countries, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have come together to launch the first Sign Language B.A. programme. The BA in Applied Sign Language Studies (BAASLS) is the first-of-its-kind venture by any institute in the world. New Delhi: From the December 2008 examination onwards, candidates appearing for various examinations of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will be given a photocopy of the answer sheet, if he/she so desires, within 45 days after the declaration of results. Issuing an order here today, IGNOU Vice Chancellor Professor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai said, "An appropriate stationery charge of rupees one hundred per paper may be levied from the candidate for this purpose. The procedure is for ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the evaluation of answer scripts. Return of the answer scripts will also give the learners an occasion to understand their mistakes and correct them through further study." The course, with multi-media inputs and developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, aims at creating environmental consciousness among professionals like engineers, doctors, government officials, planers, academicians and all the citizens interested in the cause of environment.
