PhD students to burn degrees in protest

Jaipur: PhD students will burn their degrees to protest against Rajasthan University's decision not to allow them to appear in interviews directly for the post of assistant professors in university. The RU has announced that even PhD holders will have to qualify tests, like national eligibility test (NET) or state level eligibility test (SLET). Students said that according to the university grants commission (UGC) guidelines, all PhD holders up to 2009, are exempted from taking NET or SLET and can face interviews or screening tests. However, the university has exempted only those students who have registered for PhD by clearing a pre-entrance exam. "We strongly object to the guidelines adopted by university in the selection process of assistant professors. On Monday, we will burn our degrees in front of the university gates and will take the matter to the chancellor of the university," said Ved Prakash Sharma, convener, Rajasthan PhD students' association. UGC-CSIR fellowships doubled to 3,200

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission on Friday doubled the number of UGC-CSIR fellowship from 1,600 to 3,200 even as it denied that a final decision had been taken on making the National Eligibility Test (NET) mandatory for teaching jobs. The UGC-CSIR fellowswhips are given twice a year, 800 each time, with 500 for humanities and 300 for science. Now, these would be doubled to 1,000 for humanities and 600 for science. UGC sources said the final decision on NET would be taken by the end of January. After a committee had recommended that those with M.Phil and without NET can take up teaching jobs, another committee headed by Planning Commission member BL Mungekar had said doing away with NET could affect the quality of teaching. It had demanded restoration of NET qualification for doing M.Phil. Soruce: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/UGC-CSIR_fellowships_doubled_to_3200/articleshow/3990653.cms
