Fashion technology institute to be functional next year

Shimla: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) branch slated to be set up in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district would start its admission process from August next year, an official release said on Saturday. "The NIFT would start its first batch from August next year," the release said. Textile Minister Shankarsingh Vaghela would lay the foundation stone of the institute at Chheb village near Kangra town Jan 23. The state government has provided 10 acres free of cost for setting up the institute. It would also contribute Rs.580 million (Rs.58 crore). The proposed site has been selected by a team of experts headed by NIFT director-general Rajiv Tarku. The fashion institute would help provide global exposure to hand-knitted woollens by state rural craftsmen like shawls, stoles, mufflers, socks, gloves, pullovers and caps, Kangra paintings, Chamba rumal (handkerchief), and jewellery items. 2066 students get NIFT degrees at convocation

New Delhi: Union Minister of Textiles, Mr. Shankersinh Vaghela awarded degrees to the graduating 2066 students of the batches of year 2007 and 2008 at the 14th Convocation of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), here today. Addressing on the occasion, Vaghela called upon the students to uphold the finest traditions while they carved out brilliant careers for themselves in their chosen fields. Vaghela hoped that fears of a recessionary trend seen globally could be allayed to a certain extent in the Indian context. "I also look to you, the youth, the graduates of leading institutions such as NIFT to create conditions for future growth", he said. Director General of NIFT, Mr. Rajiv Takru said that in 2006-07, NIFT added the post-graduate programme in Design Space, thereby completing its offer of master level programmes with one programme each in Design, Management and Technology. Bihar allocates Rs.586 million for NIFT branch

Patna: The Bihar government has approved the allocation of Rs.586 million for the setting up of a branch of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) here, officials said on Wednesday. The state cabinet agreed to provide financial support for the establishment of the institute on Tuesday, cabinet secretary Girish Shankar said. "The amount will be spent on the NIFT's infrastructure, including building and equipment. Of the total amount approved, Rs.270 million will be spent in the current financial year," he said. In May this year, the cabinet had approved free-of-cost transfer of 10 acres of land from the agriculture department to the industries department for establishment of the NIFT branch, which will be the ninth in the country. NIFT has branches in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Rai Bareilly. Sources said classes at NIFT will begin this academic session.
