Supreme Court directs Central Govt. to hold a Single Common Entrance Test (CET) for all Medical Courses The Supreme Court today directed the Central Government to hold a single eligibility- cum-entrance examination for MBBS and post-graduate medical courses in the country from this academic session. A Bench of justices, Mr R.V. Raveendran, and Mr A.K. Patnaik, passed the order, saying that it will also be applicable for private medical colleges in the country. The Bench asked the Government to hold the single common entrance test on a plea by Medical Council of India seeking to start a single eligibility-cum-entrance examination for MBBS and post-graduate Courses Earlier, a panel set up by the health ministry to run the Medical Council of India ( MCI) had suggested that a common entrance exam would lessen the stress of the student.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday extended till June 30 the last date for filling up the 50% 'all India quota' in the Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination, failing which the vacant seats will fall in favour of state governments. A vacation bench of Justices P Sathasivam and A K Patnaik extended the June 25 deadline by five days after the government, Medical Council of India and the petitioners, who included some candidates and NGOs, said they have no objection to it. The apex court had on May 13 given a timeline for counselling to post graduate medical courses under All India quota. The court was today informed that 136 seats were still vacant under the All India Quota. The counsel appearing for the Centre, however, said "every year, the apex court is moved at the eleventh hour seeking extension of the last date to fill the all India quota. This has to be regulated at some point." TOI
