UGC takes stern steps to stop ragging
Chandigarh: The brutal death of Amann Kachroo, the 19 year old student of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Himachal Pradesh has led University Grants Commission (UGC), to take stern steps to stop ragging in colleges. This step was much awaited as the number of incidents of deaths due to ragging or attempt to suicide had been on a high for a long time. The UGC has threatened to block funding for colleges that are unable to stop ragging in their campuses. "The commission has given an ultimatum to the educational institutions to either take preventive steps in combating the practice of ragging or face fund cuts from the commission," said Harminder Kaur Chauhan, UGC, Joint Director. "A high-powered committee has been formed to overcome the malign practice of ragging from the next academic session. It is high time that educational institutions stop ignoring such crimes.
