Education Fortnight Launched
HYDERABAD: Though health and wealth may decay, education remains indestructible, quipped chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy during the inauguration of 'Education Fortnight' at the Government High School, Ameerpet. The fortnight celebration, to be held across the state, is an initiative under the Right to Education (RTE) Act and aims to overhaul the education system by ensuring total enrolment and retention of children in schools. The project also sets out to improve educational infrastructure of government schools by providing drinking water, toilets, furniture and other amenities.
The government has allotted about `2,000 crores to improve the infrastructure in existing schools and construction of 350 model schools across the state. The inauguration of 3,569 additional classrooms in 3,273 schools will also be undertaken. The chief minister said, "It is necessary to increase the enrolment of students, even children from tribal communities. Retention of the enrolled students is equally important and is the responsibility of teachers, school management, village panchayat members and parents." Stressing on the need for extra-curricular activities, Kiran Kumar said that sports kits would be distributed to Government High Schools. Fifteen computers will also be provided to schools.
Kiran Reddy also underlined the need to reduce the gender disparity in literacy rate, which stands at 17% currently in the state.
The fortnight-long programme is divided into two phases. The first phase will focus on enrolment of maximum number of children and the second phase will be dedicated to providing books and uniforms to students, improving drinking water facilities, toilets, ramps and school buildings.
Member of Rajya Sabha V Hanumantha Rao also addressed the meet and said that education imparted in government schools need to be on par with those offered in private schools. This can be done by employing quality teachers, he said.
Kiran Kumar also performed 'Aksharabhyasam' for five children and convinced parents of a few school drop-outs to educate their wards. He promised monetary benefits and loans to the parents of these children in order to bolster the financial support system at home. Text books, uniforms and hearing aids for special children were distributed to selected students. Heavy industries minister J Geeta Reddy, primary education minister S Shailajanath and MP Anjan Kumar Yadav were also present at the event.
