DU first cutoff on June 15, may be up by 3 percent
New Delhi: Colleges at the Delhi University (DU) have already begun working out on their cutoff lists for the upcoming academic session. The first cutoff list by the Delhi University is set to be announced on June 15.
The university had decided this year to discontinue the preadmission forms and announce the cutoffs based on students' percentage of this year and the previous years.
It is being expected that the cutoff percentages for admissions to DU this year will witness a rise of about 3% in the first list.
The colleges have been told by the university to submit their cutoffs by 1 PM on June 14. However, teachers in many colleges have said that they have already calculated the first cutoff marks for this year's admission process.
As the cutoff percentages had been quite high last year, the hike in the cutoffs this year is only going to make the admissions all the more difficult for aspirants.
Aspirants may be required to have near perfect scores for the coveted courses at the university such as B.Com (Honors) and BA (Honors) Economics in the first list.
As this year there have been no applications on which the colleges can base their cutoffs, admission committees are relying heavily on cutoffs of previous years, the current class 12 exam results, past experience as well as much guesswork to decide the cutoffs for this session.
Vinay Kumar Srivastava, principal of Hindu College said that they had been looking at the lists that were released last year and also the number of admissions that had been made under each list.
"The cutoff lists have already been submitted by at least four of our departments and all teacher-in-charges are going to meet on Monday for finalizing everything. We are expecting an increase of 2-3% in some courses while it may be less than that in others," he said.
He further added that their major concern was to have a cutoff that would leave no space for over-admitting aspirants and a lot of brainstorming was happening among teachers at the college regarding the same.
Although the number of seats are limited at colleges, they tend to over-admit students as no eligible aspirant can be denied admission. Marks of students who registered online are also being taken into consideration for the preparation of cutoffs.
SGTB Khalsa College Principal Jaswinder Singh said that the first cutoffs this year are bound to be higher as several students this year have scored above 90%. "Apart from the online registrations, we have also received CDs with the CBSE class 12 results from the university. The process of compiling the cutoffs is still on," he said.
Another teacher from a college in North Campus said that they could not say how much the cutoffs will be hiked this year but they will be quite high. "It is probable that the first cutoff list will be useless for most candidates," she said.
