Admission to colleges now just a click
BHUBANESWAR: Now that the results of the board examinations (both Class X and Class XII finals) are out, the admission season has begun. However, unlike previous years, students are not dying of anxiety in their bid to secure admission to the best possible college; neither are campuses across the state witnessing a frenzied rush this year. The reason: the e-admission process started by the state government for both degree and Plus II courses.
The introduction of the online admission system has eliminated the need to stand in long, unending queues from dawn till dusk, filling in application forms and getting documents attested. Neither do students now have to go from one college to another, as they can apply to several colleges via one online form. Through e-admission, at least 3.5 lakh students are likely to take admission to Plus II and degree courses in different colleges across the state.
"The main aim of online college admission is to make the process hassle-free and convenient for both colleges and students. It was quite successful in the state last year, so we decided to include all junior and most of the degree colleges in the process. It also enables the creation of a database of students pursuing higher education in the state," said the director of higher education, B P Nanda.
With a whole lot of technical courses on offer these days, very few students are opting for graduate courses in basic subjects. Self-financing subjects are more in demand than regular courses. Besides, it has always been difficult for students to select from the science, arts and commerce streams. The final cut-off list for degree admission will be declared within the next few days by all colleges of the state.
Asit Samntaray, a student who cleared his Plus II exam this year, said, "I have secured 65% in Plus II commerce and want to do an MBA in future, so I have applied for graduation in commerce at BJB College and also for the BBA course. The online admission process is very good as it requires less money and time."
Similarly Sanchita Mahalik, who has applied for psychology honours at BJB and Ramadevi College in the city, said, "The online admission system is easy and user-friendly. Many of my friends have applied for technical courses even though they are from an arts background. But I want to pursue my graduation in psychology, which will give me varied career options later."
Each student can apply for admission to at least six colleges. For the first option, one has to pay Rs 100, while Rs 50 is charged for each of the subsequent five options. The college to which the student submits the forms is the applied college while the one he/she wishes to get admitted to is the destination college.
For any problem or clarification, the applicants can contact at a toll free number 155335 or may approach the helpdesks set up at each of the 169 colleges, Nanda added.
The higher education department has announced uniform dates for degree admission in colleges across the state. The last date for submission of application is June 14, while the first selection list will be published on June 23. Admission at colleges after the first list is declared will be on June 29; the list of second selections will be announced on July 6 and admission of this batch of applicants will be held on July 11 and 12. The classes at all degree colleges will begin from July 27, official sources said.
