PGI's MBBS course in limbo for now
CHANDIGARH: It started with a bang and ended in a whimper. The proposed introduction of MBBS course at PGI was deferred by the academic committee in a meeting held on Monday. It was chaired by Union minister for health and family welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also the president of PGI's institute body.
The committee selected a new dean of PGI and gave its nod for the formation of a selection panel that would suggest names for the post of institute's director. With this, a change of guard at the top becomes imminent.
It was expected that Azad's visit to PGI on Monday would lead to a decision regarding the start of MBBS course. But that could not happen.
Sources said the agenda of the MBBS course needed to move from the academic committee to institute body and then governing body, but it seemed to have faltered at the first step itself.
It was decided that sub-dean of PGI, Dr Amod, would be made dean, however, that would only be confirmed after the minister signs the minutes of the meeting.
The academic committee meeting that started at 11am, was followed by governing and institute body meetings. PGI's faculty association submitted a memorandum of demands to Azad after that. Its president Dr Virendra Singh said, ''We asked the minister that our association should be granted representation in the institute, governing body and academic committee.''
He added that one of their demands in the memorandum concerned the promotion of faculty members. They also sought that PGI director should be from the institute itself and MBBS course should not be started as the institute was never meant to be a medical college.
