NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY – FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2011 – CALICUT

Photonics is the field of science and engineering encompassing physical phenomena and technologies associated wi th generat ion, transmission, manipulation, detection, and utilization of light. It integrates lasers, optics and electronics to develop applications in industries such as telecommunications, information technology, entertainment and displays, precision manufacturing, biology and medicine, environmental sensing, homeland security, defense, aerospace etc. Worldwide there has been tremendous progress in the field of photonics. A Developing country like ours should have a mature and comprehensive photonic industry to establish our presence in global market. In this context this workshop is aimed at providing an insight and necessary motivation to faculty members from engineering colleges and technological institutes enabling them to take up research work in the field of photonic materials and devices.The course will contain lectures by eminent researchers and academicians from various national institutes and hands-on laboratory training in photonic devices and materials.

Course Content :
Nonlinear optics and nonlinear optical materials
Fiber optics
Organic electronics
Integrated optics and optoelectronic devices
Nanophotonics
Optical sources, detectors and related devices
Optical computing and optical signal processing
Photonic networks, switching, interconnects and access
Optical imaging and Holography

Eligibility : This is an interdisciplinary program. Teachers with specialization in any engineering stream with interest in Photonics and related fields are eligible to apply. The candidates with specialization in photonics and related field will be given preference.

Registration : Faculty from AICTE approved institutions may apply with a registration fee of Rs.250/-. This amount will be refunded on successful participation in the programme. On receipt of the intimation of provisional selection, the candidates are required to send the confirmation letter of participation to the co-ordinator, FDP on Photonics materials and devices, NIT Calicut so that the list of participants can be finalized at the earliest. For participants from Industry, the registration fee is Rs.5000/- per person.

Important Dates :

Intimation of selection on or before : 8th February 2011
Last date of receipt of confirmation of participation : 14th February 2011

G. F. Bernhard Riemann-great mathematician

Bernhard Riemann, born to a poor family in 1826, would rise to become one of the worlds prominent mathematicians in the 19th Century. The list of contributions to geometry are large, and he has a wide range of theorems bearing his name. To name just a few: Riemannian Geometry, Riemannian Surfaces and the Riemann Integral.
