2ND INDIAN SUGAR SUMMIT 2010 – KINGSMAN

The 2nd Kingsman Indian Sugar Conference is a unique event attended by all the key players in the industry. It will give attendees an opportunity to get a better feel for the complexity of the industry and will allow a rare insight into the issues involved. If you are actively involved in the world sugar market our 2nd Indian Sugar Conference is a “must attend” event.

Last season an unexpected and late increase to Indian production estimates turned the trade flow numbers positive and brought a violent end to the bull market. Since then, wherever we go, people ask us “How can we get a better handle on the Indian crop?”

Repeatedly, traders and investors question the relevance of fundamental analysis for the sugar market “when you don’t know what the Indian crop is within three million tonnes”.

There are no easy answers to these questions. The Indian sugar industry is horribly complex: with an estimated 50 million cane farmers, unstable weather patterns, an unpredictable diversion of cane from sugar to gur and government intervention at every stage of the production and distribution process it is not surprising that the crystal ball is often pretty cloudy.

We would argue that the 2009/10 crop was exceptional in a number of factors and that statistical forecasts can be improved. To achieve that end, market participants (ourselves included) need to delve deeper into the Indian industry in order to obtain a better understanding of the drivers behind both production and consumption.
