NCERT adopts bollywood themes as reference material for class XII

New Delhi: Adding a new horizon to the field of academia, the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) is adopting popular culture for the curriculum of class XII to make study more interesting.

The NCERT is going to use themes of acclaimed movies of bollywood as reference material in class XII Political Science textbooks.

Several prominent bollywood movies including 'Garam Hawa' (1973) have been introduced as reference material.

Garam Hawa, which is based on partition, has been introduced under the chapter "Challenges of nation building".

Amitabh Bacchan's blockbuster 'Zanjeer' (1973) has also been introduced under the chapter "Challenges of restoration of the Congress system" as this movie portrays the erosion of moral values in the system.

Few regional movies have also found place into the textbook.

An NCERT sources said, "This attempt makes a departure from the legacy of bookish learning, which continues to shape our system and thus causes a gap between the school, home and community."

Oscar winner Satyajit Ray's masterpiece 'Pather Panchali' has also been adopted as reference material to better understand the chapter "Politics of planned development".

This curriculum was prepared by the team consisting of Hari Vasudevan of the Calcutta University, Yogendra Yadav of the Centre for Studies on Development Societies and Suhas Palshikar of the Pune University.
