1 lakh engineering seats in Haryana by 2010

NEW DELHI: The Haryana government on Friday said it would be doubling the number of "quality" engineering colleges in the state, considering the 1:3 ratio of engineering students to job availability. This would push the total number of seats to one lakh by 2010. The state government also spelt out a plan to increase the number of management and other professional institutes in the state, with the majority of them likely to come up in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonepat and Panipat. Terming these initiatives a bid to establish Haryana as India’s "show window" for technical education, CM Bhupender Singh Hooda said, "It will have a telling impact on north India is the launch of the Rajiv Gandhi Education City at Kundli in September. It will be set up on 2000 acres and would be developed along the lines of the Oxford campus. Several institutes of international repute have shown interest." According to the plan, a major thrust would be on engineering institutes since in the backdrop of the hectic development in the state’s manufacturing sector, there has been increase in the demand for technically skilled manpower. The government proposes to add 50 private engineering colleges to the current 62 institutes in the state. The proposal also aims to increase the number of MCA, B Pharma and hotel management institutes. Hooda said since the proposed growth in education must provide employment to Haryanvi students, there is a provision to reserve 25% seats for them in all the institutes in Education City. "Five% will avail full concession. Another 10% will get 50% concession and the rest 10% will avail 25% concession," the CM said.
