Nagpur: Prakash and Mandakini Amte, the physician couple who have won this year's Magsaysay Award for community leadership, have been running a hospital, a school and development centre in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district since 1974. Prakash is the son of renowned social worker Baba Amte, a Magsaysay award winner himself. Prakash, 60, and Mandakini, 62, who studied at Government Medical College , Nagpur, plunged into social work immediately after getting their degrees, starting a health centre at Hemalkasa in the middle of an area inhabited largely by the Maria Gonds tribesmen. For decades, they have worked under the shadow of Murlidhar Devidas Amte, revered as Baba Amte, who died on Feb 9 this year. Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), which has decided to introduce a course in Islamic banking from the next academic session, will also offer separate courses in Islamic insurance and finance, a university official said on Thursday. "The varsity intends to start these courses to cater to the ever increasing demand for trained personnel in Islamic insurance and finance sectors," AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told sources. The Islamic insurance course will be a diploma course, while Islamic finance will be a two-year masters programme, he added. The two courses have been recommended by a three-member committee appointed by AMU Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis to work out the feasibility of offering courses on Islamic banking including the possibility of establishing a new department dedicated to the subject, the official said. Patna: Bihar boy Shitikanth Barnwal, who topped this year's Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), has won the gold medal at the 39th International Physics Olympiad. Hundreds of students from 85 countries participated in the Physics Olympiad, which was held in Hanoi, Vietnam July 22-28. "It was my childhood dream to bag the gold medal and at last I won it by hard labour," an upbeat Shitikanth said on Thursday. "The Indian team won four gold medals and a silver medal. It was a wonderful experience," the 18-year-old told sources over telephone from Mumbai. Shitikanth had the highest aggregate score among Indians. Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government on Wednesday announced 5,000 scholarships for Muslim students. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters that the steps for the welfare of the minority community were being taken after a report was submitted by Local Administration Minister Paloly Mohammed Kutty, who studied the Sacchar Committee recommendations."We have decided to give 5,000 scholarships to Muslim students who pursue graduate and postgraduate courses. They will be eligible (to get) Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000 every year," Achuthanandan said addressing a news conference here after the weekly cabinet meeting.Muslim's in Kerala account for 24 percent of the 32 million population."It has also been decided to set up a welfare fund and also extend pension benefits to madrassa teachers. Patna: Decks have been cleared for establishing the Aryabhatt Knowledge University at the Bihar capital here, a minister said on Wednesday. The varsity is named after a famous astronomer and mathematician of ancient India. Bihar Human Resource Development Minister Hari Narayan Singh on Wednesday said that the state assembly has passed the Aryabhatt Knowledge University Bill, 2008 for setting up the university. "After the assembly passed the bill on Tuesday, work will soon start for setting up the university," Singh said. He said that university is being established with the objective to regulate and add value to institutions imparting education on modern science like Information Technology, Nano-technology and Bio-technology. Kozhikode: Kerala's second Institute of Hospitality Management and Catering Technology (IHMCT) will start functioning from next month, state Tourism Secretary V. Venu said here on Wednesday. The institute will start functioning from a temporary facility here on Aug 4. A five-acre plot in Kozhikode city has been identified to locate the institute and the work on the building is expected to be completed in three years. The central and state governments together will spend Rs.156.5 million to set up the institute. Initially, the institute will offer three-year graduate course in hospitality management. "The institute is a milestone in the effort of the tourism department to provide higher education in the field of hospitality management. The selection of the students will be based on the examination conducted at the national level," Venu said.
