How to make IIT dreams come true

For every IIT aspirant, scoring high at the 'JEE' or Joint Entrance Exam, sets the foundation for a bright career. Therefore, it is extremely important to approach JEE preparation in the right manner, under the guidance of an established and reputed training institute with a proven track record. The entrance exam results last week highlighted several noteworthy trends. Vishwas Deshpande, Managing Director, Vidyalankar Classes, points out that the awareness of this exam has certainly increased over the years and more and more Mumbai students are eager to crack this exam. "As everybody is aware the IIT JEE is the most difficult exam with the selection rate at only about 2 ½ percent. The students who decide early, say 8th standard, and start working diligently towards this exam seem to be doing well in the grand final. The analytical thinking developed during these initial years of their exposure to the subjects of Maths, Physics and Chemistry goes a long way in creating the

Need for focus on all-India entrance exams

Tamil Nadu students do not figure in the top 50 candidates in the results of entrance tests J. Harini, who recently cleared her standard XII with 198 marks cut-off in core subjects, is hopeful of getting admission in Anna University. She had attempted two of the national-level engineering entrances, but could not clear them. “I found the questions very tough. But, I had devoted all my time in preparing for the State board examinations, because a good result is sufficient to get into good colleges here,” she says. Focus on Std. XII Hundreds of students in the State who prefer to focus on the preparation for standard XII examinations, over national level engineering entrance tests, like Harini did, would probably say the same thing. “Tamil Nadu students do not figure in the top 50 candidates in the results of entrance tests to IITs, VIT, Amrita and SRM Universities,” says education consultant Jayaprakash A.Gandhi. Analysis of these results show that Tamil Nadu lags behind Andhra Pradesh,

What are the tax benefits of education loans?

The ever-increasing cost of educationis worrying parents who want their children to pursue higher education. Financing the high-pricededucation is a matter of concern for all such parents. However, the last decade has seen Indian banking industry coming to the rescue of such parents by way of granting education loans. Like the banking sector, the income tax laws have also kept pace with the need of supporting these students and parents. In this article, I shall discuss the various aspects of tax benefits surrounding education loans. Nature of deduction The income tax laws allow you to claim interest paid by you in respect of an education loan against your taxable income without any upper limit. However, the deduction is available only in respect of interest and there is no provision in the present law for allowing deduction on the repayment of the principal amount. High scores in CBSE math to raise DU cutoffs

New Delhi: With 1449 students receiving merit certificates in mathematics in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 examinations this year, it is being speculated that admission to popular courses such as B.Com, B.Com (Honors) and Economics (Hons.) in Delhi University (DU) colleges will be extremely tough this year. Only 749 students had received merit certificates in the CBSE Class 12 Mathematics exam by scoring 99% marks or higher. CBSE figures this year have revealed that 2265 students in Delhi alone have scored 98% and above in mathematics this year. As maths is a compulsory subject for B.Com (Hons) in most colleges and for B.Com in some colleges, students aspiring to opt for these courses will have to face much competition. Also, various college sources have alleged that the cutoff percentage for Economics (Hons) is also expected to be quite high this year as mathematics is a compulsory subject for the economics programme as well. IIT Topper: 'I watched a movie before the exam!'

Andhra Pradesh has once again established its supremacy in cracking the prestigious IIT-Joint Entrance Examinations yet again. Candidates from the state have bagged 40 of the top 100 ranks this year. Also the topmost rank in the general category has gone to the 17-year-old Prithvi Teja from the rural area of West Godavari district. Unassuming Teja had expected to do well in the IIT-JEE and be among the top twenty rankers but had never dreamt that he was going to be the top ranker and will be flooded by greetings and laudatory messages and good wishes including from the state Chief Minister. The boy attributed his success to the two mantras of "no tension" and "following your elders". "If you want to be successful in any thing you do, don't take too much stress," he told us just before he was packing up to fly to Bangkok for the Physics Olympiad. A product of Vishwabharati School in Gudivada and Chaitanya College, Vijaywada, Teja is the son of a jewelle

A systematic approach

Since childhood, I had always wanted to become a lawyer. By the time I reached high school, my conviction to pursue the profession grew stronger. When in class XI, I started preparing for various law entrance examinations. To begin with, it was not an easy process and it took me almost a year to get familiar with the basic components of the subject. I went through previous years' papers and tried to understand what the papers entail. It was only when I was in class XII that I streamlined my preparation. The road ahead was tough as I had to prepare for the entrance exams alongside my class XII board examinations. So, I had to work out a way to prepare for both, simultaneously. I divided my time equally because both — national law entrance exam and board exam — were important for my future. However, it was due to adequate time management that I never felt the pressure. My first step, while preparing for the National Law University, Delhi (NLU-D ) entrance examination, was to identify

Coaching class over college

While her board exams were just around the corner, Shubham Jain, 15, was busy preparing for an entrance exam to get into a coaching class. “I cannot imagine clearing IIT-JEE (the entrance exam to the Indian Institutes of Technology) without joining a coaching class,” said Jain, an aspiring IITian who scored 96% in her ICSE exams. With results coming out one after the other — ICSE and ISC results were declared on May 17, CBSE Class 12 results were declared on May 23 and HSC results were declared on May 27 — the admission season has begun. But more than college admissions, students are fretting about getting into the right coaching class. While classes that coach for professional entrance exams such as engineering, medical, chartered accountancy and company secretary have entrance tests, exams for regular courses mostly offer walk-in admissions. The hunt for these classes begins well in advance. “I started looking out for classes for my son immediately after his Class 10 results, even be

Online exam results a boon for most

Online board exam results have come as a blessing to many who could not make it to the merit list. Some ex-students and current HSC students spoke about the pros and cons of this system. Sunanda Suryawanshi a HSC pass out in the late 60s said, "In our times, we used to get excited to see the merit list, but since late 90s it seems to be aburden to do so as parents are tense till their kids return home from the college after checking the results." When asked about the positive aspect of online results, Suryawanshi added, "Parents can check the results online along with their children and can counsel them in advance in case they have not performed well. This was not the case earlier." Akash Bhingare (name changed) who got very low marks said, "I am happy that the results were not put up on notice boards. It would have demeaned me even more." Preeti Wakde, another HSC student said, "It is a real blessing to get results online without actually going to co

IIT JEE toppers form Physics Olympiad team

Four of the five IIT Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) toppers this year have something in common: the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). They are part of the team that represents India in the Olympiad in July. Almost every year, the students selected by Mumbai’s Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) for the Physics Olympiad find themselves at the top of the JEE rank list. This year’s team: All India topper Prithvi Teja, Shubham Mehta (JEE rank 2), B Sai Kiran (4), Nisheeth Lahoti (5) and Sumegha Garg (12), the topper among girls. “The elite team of five students to represent India at the Physics Olympiad was picked on May 23, two days before the JEE results were announced. It’s not the first time that the students selected and groomed by us have bagged top slots in JEE. It has been a trend for several years now,” says Professor Vijay Singh, national coordinator, Science Olympiads. The three-tier selection process started in November 2010. Exam dates to be announced at start of academic yr

MUMBAI: Students appearing for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams plan their study schedule as soon as the board announces the exam timetable. But students appearing for the 2012 board exams can plan studying for the exam right from day one of the academic session, following a decision by the school education department to declare the HSC schedule as soon as Class XII begins. "When colleges reopen after the summer vacation, the timetable for HSC exams will be announced," school education minister Rajendra Darda told TOI. "Releasing the timetable almost a year in advance will help students prepare their schedule for studies and chalk out admission plans," Darda added. Usually, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education announces the exam dates either in December or January. But this time it had announced the dates of the exam held in February-March three months in advance. "The objective of releasing the board exam schedule

Medical Education Dept asks VYAPAM to hold PMT in June

Bhopal: In direct contravention of Supreme Court’s order asking for the completion of admissions to the state’s medical colleges before July 15, it is feared that even the Pre Medical Test (PMT) entrance exam will not be held by that date. The Medical Education Department has been late in framing the rules for conducting the exam which is the reason for the delay. Now the department is asking VYAPAM to conduct the exam in June and declare the results by July 15. The departments Principal Secretary, in his letter, has asked VYAPAM to hold the exam and declare the result before July 15 as per Supreme Court’s order. VYAPAM, on the other hand says that it would be very difficult to conduct exams in such a short period. The Medical Education department had given the rules for conducting the examination to VYAPAM only in the month of May and it usually takes two months preparation to conduct the exam. Therefore it appears very unlikely that PMT will be held before the last week of July this

PGET row: Karnataka high court asks CID to give report by Aug 21

The high court on Thursday directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to hold a fresh enquiry into the malpractices in the post-graduate entrance test (PGET) for medical courses. It also directed Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to conduct fresh counselling for all eligible PGET candidates in the case questioning the state government’s move to nullify 11 toppers for alleged malpractices in the post-graduate medical entrance exam. The CID has been asked to submit its report by August 21. It may be recalled that Vinod Karjgi, Haridattatreya Mantagni, Dhananjay and other toppers had filed a petition in the high court. They had questioned the deletion of their names from the merit list without giving them an opportunity for hearing. They said that this move was illegal and at least a notice should have been given to them. Hence, the petitioners sought for permission to attend the counselling. Justice BS Patil directed that a fresh enquiry into the PGET be conduc

Coaching IIT-JEE aspirants to victory

While comparing the calibre of the students of the Indian Institutes of Technology versus the teaching faculty there, Jairam Ramesh left out one crucial element in the equation: the coaching classes. Even if the much-vaunted tech schools' teachers do not match up to the environment minister's exacting world standards, our tutorial networks certainly do. With places like Kota notching up a disproportionate number of successful 'candidates' , something has to be said for the unsung pedagogues in countless cramped coaching centres who turn raw talent into well-synchronised examination clearing machines. Judging by the array of young people who have charted their path to IIT and future success through their classes and postal notes, it may not be fanciful to imagine that without them, no world-class Indian child would ever clear the formidable IIT Joint Entrance Examination . Then, horror of horrors, IIT teachers (substandard or otherwise) would be left with empty classes.

IIT-JEE 2011 top ranker from Kota, Rajasthan

Nearly 4.75 lakh students who appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for the crème de la crème of engineering institutes of the World, the Indian Institutes of Technology, waited with bated breath for their results on Wednesday.
