Petition against IIMs filed by CAT toppers

New Delhi: A writ petition by over 70 Common Admission Test (CAT) toppers was filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday for seeking a stay on the second phase of the admission procedure of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Most of the students who have filed the petition are among the 1% top CAT scorers but have not received a call for admission from the IIMs due to pre-test criteria that had been kept hidden by the prestigious b-schools till the result for CAT-2010 was announced on January 12. The eligibility criteria for admissions have been changed by three IIMs after CAT-2010. Also, five other IIMs had decided to give weightage to Class X, XII and undergraduate marks. Jamia is minority institution, rules commission

New Delhi: Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia university was on Tuesday granted "minority institution" status by National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI), giving the institution right to reserve up to 50 percent of its seats for Muslims, annulling all other reservations. "We hold that the Jamia Millia Islamia is a minority education institution," ruled the three-member quasi-judicial body of the commission headed by Justice M.S.A. Siddiqi. The other two members of the body were Mohinder Singh and Cyriac Thomas. Observing that the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a minority education institution founded by the Muslims for the benefit of community, the commission said there was no reason for not giving it a minority institution status. "We have no hesitation in holding that the Jamia was founded by the Muslims for the benefit of Muslims and it never lost its character as a Muslim education institution," it said. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a residential academic institution located in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. CBI to investigate law college recognitions granted by BCI

New Delhi: Several affiliations that had been granted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to various law colleges in the past five years are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI). BCI vice chairman R. Dhanpal Raj had been arrested by the CBI from his residence in Tamil Nadu after a probe into the affiliation that had been granted to Global Law College in Ghaziabad. According to sources, cash amounting to about Rs.75 lakh had been recovered during the raids conducted against BCI officials that had been arrested in connection with the case. R. Dhanpal Raj has been remanded by the court in police custody till February 25, 2011. An FIR had been filed against a member of the Bar Council of Delhi, R.S. Rana, who had allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy by demanding money from Manish Tyagi in order to conduct the inspection of a law college and giving a favorable report for granting recognition to the college. Indian Forest Service Exam 2010 Result declared

New Delhi: The Union Service Public Commission (UPSC) has announced the result of the Indian Forest Service Examination that was held in July 2010. The list in order of merit contains the names of 85 candidates, including 35 belonging to other backward classes, 15 to the scheduled castes and 07 to the scheduled tribes. The appointment to the service will be made by the government according to the number of vacancies available. The number of vacancies intimated by the government is 85. UPSC has a facilitation counter near the examination hall at its campus. Candidates can obtain any information or clarification during working days in person or over telephone.

Exhibition titled 'Transformation' to be held at JMI

New Delhi: An exhibition titled "Transformation", organized by four students of the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), will be held at the university campus from February 21 to 26. The students that are organizing the exhibition are from the Department of Art History and Art Appreciation at the varsity. They will be donning the roles of curators for the exhibition that is a part of the paper "History of Curational Practices", which is included in their syllabus. Other institutions that will be participating in the exhibition include Delhi College of Art, Government College of Art in Chandigarh, Tecnia Institute of Art and Design and Banaras Hindu University. Shillong: Meghalaya ranks way below the national average in imparting elementary education in the country, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), 2010. The national average of children in the 3-4 years age group in 'anganwadi' schools is 75.7 percent, whereas Meghalaya's average is way below at 46.7 percent, revealed the report, released on Thursday by Leader of Opposition Conrad K. Sangma. According to the report, the national average of children in the age group of 6-14 out of school is 3.5 percent and Meghalaya's average is more that double at 7.2 percent. Moreover, children between ages 3 and 6 years not attending any kind of pre-school is very high in Meghalaya and the percentage of such children in the state is increasing year after year since 1997. IIMs trash HRD suggestions on teaching hours, smaller boards

Bangalore: Faculty bodies at IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Bangalore have passed unanimous resolutions to set aside the reports which suggest reducing the size of IIM boards and societies and asking each faculty to teach for 160 hours a year. Other IIMs are likely to follow suit seeking broader consultation on the proposed reforms. They have trashed the HRD ministry-appointed committee reports on the new governance structure and teaching load, saying that they are based on incorrect data. They believe that these recommendations are the outcome of several wrong assumptions and incorrect data and would not allow IIMs to become global leaders. These changes, if implemented, will have a negative impact on the morale of the faculty, IIM-B faculty said in a memorandum submitted to board of governors chairman Mukesh Ambani last week. Patna: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will on Saturday felicitate Anand Kumar, who founded Bihar's free coaching centre Super 30 and helped many underprivileged students enter the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Chennai: The Central Board of Secondary Education has said Class IX students can score higher marks in maths or science by showing they have a healthy attitude or adequate life skills. In a recent circular, CBSE has asked schools to award higher grades in subjects under the scholastic category, which includes English, mathematics, science or social science, to students who get exceptionally good scores in coscholastic areas where they are tested attitude towards the teacher, discipline, or leadership qualities. All school heads are advised to explain this promotion policy for Class IX in detail to parents, teachers and students to create awareness and avoid unnecessary inconvenience at a later stage the CBSE circular said. New IIIT to be set up in West Bengal

Kolkata: The central government has approved the plan to set up an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in West Bengal, the state's Information Technology Minister Debesh Das said here on Thursday. "The government of West Bengal has got an IIIT. The centre has sanctioned our proposal for setting up of the IIIT," Das said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of INFOCOM here. "The centre will provide 50 percent of the cost, state will provide 35 percent and the rest will come from the industry," he added. He, however, did not give details of the project. "In 2006, the people working in the (infotech) sector was 32,000 and in 2010 it stood at 105,000. In 2006, IT export from the state was Rs.2,700 crore and in 2010, it became Rs.6,500 crore," Das said. Meghalaya ranks poorly in elementary education - report

Shillong: Meghalaya ranks way below the national average in imparting elementary education in the country, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), 2010. The national average of children in the 3-4 years age group in 'anganwadi' schools is 75.7 percent, whereas Meghalaya's average is way below at 46.7 percent, revealed the report, released on Thursday by Leader of Opposition Conrad K. Sangma. According to the report, the national average of children in the age group of 6-14 out of school is 3.5 percent and Meghalaya's average is more that double at 7.2 percent. Moreover, children between ages 3 and 6 years not attending any kind of pre-school is very high in Meghalaya and the percentage of such children in the state is increasing year after year since 1997.
