UGC plans anti-ragging regulations before new session

Chandigarh: Admitting that mere Supreme Court guidelines are not enough to prevent ragging from spoiling the careers of students, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to convert these into strict regulations before the next academic session. "We have realised that more than a decade-old guidelines are not enough to curb the menace of ragging. So, we have formed a four-member committee that would convert these guidelines into regulations as regulations are more strong and easier to enforce on the accused students or the institution," UGC chairman Sukhadeo Thorat told reporters here on Sunday. "The committee will submit its report in the next one or two months and we would circulate it in all the colleges and universities. We are taking this issue very seriously and the new regulations would be implemented before the start of next academic session." DU distance learning students left in the lurch

New Delhi: Many aspirants for government jobs have been left in the lurch after the Delhi University distance-learning course they undertook was not recognised by the recruitment body Staff Selection Commission (SSC). SSC, a government recruitment body constituted by the government, has cancelled the candidature of all the students who graduated from School of Open Learning (SOL), University of Delhi, claiming their degrees were not recognised by the Distance Education Council (DEC). "I have received a memorandum from SSC instructing me to get a certificate from DEC failing which my candidature will be cancelled," Subhash Chandra Tiwari, a graduate from SOL selected for the post of tax assistant, told sources. The memorandum sent by SSC says, "If the universities offering Distance Learning Mode of Education are not recognised by the Distance Education Council (DEC), the degrees issued by it are not valid. Online admission for junior colleges back with a bang

Mumbai: No more waiting in the long queues for admission in the colleges, students can reap the benefits of online admission in junior colleges once again. "There will be an online admission system across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for class X students applying for the first year of junior college and the system is completely different from last year," Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, State Education Minister said on March 25. The system was launched for the first time in Mumbai last year. However, few months back, the state education department said there would be no online admissions this year, following complaints over technical snags last year. "New policy and guidelines for online admissions, which will be more transparent and user-friendly compared to last year have been introduced. Maharashtra announces new date to conduct CET

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET), for admission to government technical and medical colleges will be held on May 12, this was announced yesterday. The CET exam was earlier scheduled on May 7. US seeks applications from Indian teachers to study English

New Delhi: The US-India Education Foundation is seeking applications from young Indians, currently teaching English at college level or training to be English teachers, to train them in the US universities. In return, they would be required to teach one of four Indian languages. Grants will be offered in the coming academic year starting August or September 2009, a statement from the US embassy said here on Tuesday. Under the foundation's Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program, Indians teaching English, aged 21 to 29, would be recruited to teach either Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi or Urdu at colleges, universities and high school for nine months "while refining their skills and English proficiency and enhancing their knowledge of the US society and culture". These selected teachers will be able to take courses in English teaching and US Studies as non-degree students. The deadline for receiving applications for the programme is July 15. IANS

UGC has asked universities to adopt Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to facilitate inter- institution transfer of students after the completion of a semester. CBCS will also provide the facility of part completion of academic programmes in the enrolled institution to the specialized institution. Medical College to come up in Perambur

Chennai: Southern Railway (SR) in Perambur is planning to establish a medical college with private participation at its existing hospital premises. The expression of interest was called from resourceful medical institutions in the country on March 20 by the Chief Medical Director of SR for establishing and running the college at the cost of the institutions as per the regulations of Medical Council of India (MCI). As per the MCI norms, the institutions should at least have 10 years experience in running a medical college and attached hospital. The bid is also open for foreign institutions provided they abide by respective foreign medical regulatory authority norms. The current 500-bed hospital on a 15-acre site of SR has to be shifted to a new location and the existing and the proposed new hospital will be available for establishing the medical college. New Delhi: Seeing the pathetic plight of children at the hands of care givers in Shimla and Mumbai, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has vouched for the inclusion of human rights education (HRE) in the school curriculum. The government also took serious note of the deteriorating human rights situation of children. The Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry admitted that it had become important to introduce human rights education into school, college and university system. Taking this grave matter into account, the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) has prepared a blueprint of the draft syllabus for "Human rights and gender studies" subject. It will be implemented from the next year as an elective courses in classes XI and XII. The mooted question is the evaluation of children in the context. AMU College gets NBA accreditation

Aligarh: The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has accredited with excellence, all the B.Tech programmes taught by the Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has initiated the NBA for developing a quality-conscious system of technical education. UGC takes stern steps to stop ragging

Chandigarh: The brutal death of Amann Kachroo, the 19 year old student of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Himachal Pradesh has led University Grants Commission (UGC), to take stern steps to stop ragging in colleges. This step was much awaited as the number of incidents of deaths due to ragging or attempt to suicide had been on a high for a long time. The UGC has threatened to block funding for colleges that are unable to stop ragging in their campuses. New Delhi, March 14: Thousands of students sat for their Class X Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) maths exam in centres across the country and abroad on Saturday. Many found the paper “tough” while others felt the questions were “indirect”. Many students at an exam centre here walked out with tired frowns on their faces. “The paper was tough. I just about managed to finish it,” said Amandeep Mohla, a Class X student of Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan. Aarti Dhar NEW DELHI: The Centre ordered late on Tuesday night an enquiry into the death of a first year medical student Aman Kachru. Aman was allegedly beaten to death by his seniors at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. Describing the death due to ragging as unacceptable, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss told The Hindu that the Union Health Secretary and the Director General of Health Services would look into this case, along with the overall ragging scenario across the medical colleges in the country. UGC recognizes Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University

Sonepat: The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently granted recognition to the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology, Murthal. The recognition was granted under section 12-B of the UGC Act. A team of seven members had visited the University for inspection on January 23 and 24. The report was then submitted to the UGC. H.S. UGC awards grade 'A' to Maulana Azad varsity

IGNOU to open training centre in Orissa

IGNOU starts skill training to enhance employablility

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Monday announced starting of skill building courses for students to enhance "employability". The courses are a result of a memorandum of understanding signed in August 2008 between the university and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). "Various industries are facing an acute shortage of certified skilled people. These courses will cater to localised demand of skill and capacity building - it will link education to employability," V.S. Rajasekharan Pillai, vice-chancellor of IGNOU, told sources here. The BA in Applied Sign Language Studies (BAASLS) is the first-of-its-kind venture by any institute in the world. 65-year-old appears for class 10 exams for 44th time

Lucknow: A 65-year-old grocery shop owner in Uttar Pradesh, undeterred by past failures, is appearing for class 10 exams for the 44th time. "Jabbar is taking the exams in the Adarsh Janta Inter college in Fatehpur district as a private candidate," District Inspector of Schools Prem Prakash Maurya told sources over phone. Fatehpur district is around 200 km from here. "He would be probably the oldest student enrolled with the UP (Uttar Pradesh) board. His determination to pass the exam has impressed us all," added Maurya. Jabbar, a resident of the Bindki village in Fatehpur, has opted take the exams in English. Gangtok: The State Government in Gangtok has launched a professional course in Radio Jockeying (RJ) for the unemployed youths of the state. The Information and Public Relations Department (IPR) would select 10 unemployed youths and provide them with rigorous training for three months. Himachal bans mobile phones during school exams

Shimla: Mobile phones will ring trouble both for the invigilators and the students in Himachal Pradesh during the board examinations that commence Tuesday, an official here said on Monday. "To avoid disturbance during board examinations, we have decided to impose a ban on the use of mobile phones in the examination centres," Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education chairman C.L. Gupta told sources. He said even the examiners would not be allowed to carry mobile phones inside the examination halls. The board examinations are starting Tuesday. Delhi to get two more centres of IGNOU

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon establish its two more centres in New Delhi. Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of the University, announced this during the 20th convocation held on February 28. Out of these two centres, one will be established at Jantar Mantar and a regional centre will come up at Dwarka. At present, Delhi has 33 IGNOU Study Centres and 2 Regional Centres. A new centre is also likely to come up in Noida to ensure better student support in the National Capital Region (NCR). The University has opened seven more regional centres at Goa, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Nagpur, Vijayawada, Thiruvananthapuram and Jorhat. 300 new learners support centres have already been started in the country to ensure better outreach. CET dates may be revised

Bangalore: The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) is mulling over revising the dates of the Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional courses, as there is clash between the Lok Sabha elections in the state with the examination schedule. According to the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, 11 Parliamentary constituencies will be held on April 30, the same date on which the CET for physics and chemistry subjects is scheduled. The KEA had scheduled two-day CET on April 29 and 30. "We would consult KEA officials on March 3, and decide on whether the CET dates needed to be revised," said Arvind Limbavali, Minister for Higher Education Even S.G. Hegde, Commissioner of Department of Pre-University Education and Special Officer of CET, agreed that Tuesdays' meeting would clear the air. NEW DELHI: The class 10th and 12th CBSE board examinations began across the country today in which over 14.5 lakh students are expected to appear. While the class 10th boards would end on March 30, the class 12th exams will end on April 2. The secondary examinations will be held at 2,714 centres and class 12th at 2,506 centres. A total of 14,62,016 students will take part in the examinations this year, which is 1,46,985 more than the last year. Last year, 13,15,031 students took the examinations, a statement from the Central Board for Secondary Examination said. About 8,24,438 students -- 4,87,475 boys and 3,36,963 girls -- would take the class 10th examinations while 6,37,578 -- 3,73,330 boys and 2,64,248 girls -- would appear for class 12th exams. A total of 2,31,651 students have registered for class 10th examination in Delhi at 568 centres, while 1,81,393 have enrolled for class 12th at 555 centres. Community Radio Station to come up at Chaudhary Devilal University

New Delhi: A Grant of Permission Agreement has been signed by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B), Government of India to establish maintain and operate a Community Radio Station (CRS) at Chaudhary Devilal University, Sirsa, Haryana. As per the agreement the Community Radio Station is likely to be operational within three months. "The proposed CRS would primarily serve the University community residing in and around the University Campus by inculcating more cohesiveness among its members through their active involvement in its programming," said an I&B official. The rural community living in the coverage area of the proposed CRS would be another major group to be served by it. 82.6 pc of the population that comes under the radius of this Community Radio Station is rural. Bar on age spells trouble for law colleges

BANGALORE: In what can be termed a major blow to law colleges in the state, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has imposed age restrictions on students who want to pursue LLB courses from the coming academic year। Once BCI’s amended rules on age limit to admission for the five-year and three-year LLB courses come into force, a majority of law colleges will be forced to close down. Recently, BCI sent a circular to all 86 law colleges in the state regarding amendment of rule 4 of legal education and directed that the rule had to be followed for the academic year 2009-10. In the amended rule, BCI has fixed 20 years as the maximum age for admission for five-year LLB courses and 30 years for the three-year LLB courses.
