Fifth Convocation held at IP University

New Delhi: About 9,246 students were conferred their degrees (in-absentia) at the fifth Convocation of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), held today in the capital. IGNOU to establish three research, development centres

New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon establish three national level institutions including the IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education Training (IIVET), IGNOU Institute for Professional Competency and Advancement of Teachers (IIPCAT) and North-East Centre for Research and Development (NECRD). The announcement was made by Prof. Omprakash Mishra, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IGNOU. Announcing this Prof. Mishra said, "For now, we plan that the NECRD be developed to be a think-tank. 25 students of Research and Teaching Assistantship (RTAs) have been appointed who could pursue their PhDs and at the same time contribute to the extension and outreach activities of the university in the North East Region." Ajmer: The Board of Secondary Education of Rajasthan (BOSER) has put the roll numbers of students, appearing for the senior secondary examination scheduled to be held from March 12, 2009, on its website. "This year a total of 4,37,310 examinees are appearing for the senior secondary examination. ICAI's Accountancy Museum to open doors on February 2

New Delhi: To share and preserve the heritage of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) profession and commemorate the diamond jubilee year of the institute, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will inaugurate the country's first Accountancy Museum on February 2, 2009 at the ICAI Bhawan, Noida. The museum is being set up by the ICAI with an aim to provide a journey through various stages of the glorious past of the CA profession in India and the conception and growth of the Institute. The museum will comprise of rare collection of items including rare documents, photographs, paintings and memorabilia. IGNOU to conduct OPENMAT on February 1

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will conduct OPENMAT 2009, for admission to various management programmes, on February 1, 2009. The entrance test will be held between 10.00 am to 1.00 pm at 133 centres accommodating 22,637 candidates. An official from the varsity said, "The hall tickets have already been dispatched to the candidates by the University. The particulars of hall tickets are also available on the IGNOU Website www.ignou.ac.in". "In case of non-receipt of Hall-ticket by any candidate, the Hall-ticket can be downloaded from the University Website by entering name and date of birth of the candidate and report to the Examination Centre". In case candidates are unable to download the Hall-ticket, they can contact the Regional Centre and obtain the information of Examination Centre allocated and report to the Examination Centre with a proof of submission of Entrance Test application form along with recent passport size photograph.

ICAI conducts workshop on International Financial Reporting Standards

New Delhi: A workshop on International Financial Reporting Standards was organized here yesterday by the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). "The workshop was organized as part of its continuing efforts to facilitate improvement in the performance of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs)", said on official release from the Ministry. The admission strength for under-graduate and post-graduate courses at the institute will also be increased to 200 and 127 seats from the existing 130 and 70 respectively over a period of three years. As per an official release issued here today, the redevelopment should be completed "within a period of 32 months so as to comply with the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 at the cost of Rs.387.31 crores." The Act stipulates reservations for admission for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes in Central Educational Institutions established, maintained or aided by the Central Government. New Delhi: The union cabinet on Thursday approved the setting of a National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management that will develop technologies to combat droughts, extreme temperatures, floods and salinity - which threaten agriculture. To be located in Malegaon in Maharashtra, the institute's mandate will be to pioneer research and ensure that these technologies when put in practice will lead to adaptation of crops, livestock, horticulture and fisheries to such stresses, said a cabinet note. Most of the environmental stresses are being caused by climate change. "Abiotic stresses like drought, temperature extremes, flood, salinity, material toxicity and nutritive deficiency are threatening agricultural production globally," the statement said. "India being a tropical country faces such abiotic stresses to a significant degree which has implications for maintaining national food security." New Delhi: At a time jobs are becoming scarce and pink slips the order of the day with the global meltdown, there is reason to cheer. Delhi University's newly-launched Central Placement Cell has provided jobs to at least 200 undergraduate students with major companies, including IT major Wipro, pharma giant Ranbaxy and BPO major Genpact. The first phase of recruitment took place between Dec 8 and 10 in which around 154 students got employment. The second phase, which began Jan 21 and ended on Tuesday, ensured jobs to 45 applicants, while 440 short-listed students are awaiting results of their applications. "Around 4,564 students from 48 colleges participated in this job fair in which around 200 students have been ensured good position in top companies. The response of the students was good," Seema M. Mumbai may soon get country's first music university

Mumbai: If all goes as planned, Mumbai will soon get country's first university dedicated to music. This has been proposed by Rajesh Tope, minister for higher and technical education, Maharashtra Government. The university will be residential and suited to students who want to make a career in music. An official of the department said, "We are also examining whether a renowned personality in the field of music can head the university." The university will also house a fine arts department. Graduate, post graduate, diploma and certificate courses will be offered by the university. In addition to Indian classical, semi-classical and Western classical music, students will also be taught painting and sculpting. The faculty will comprise noted personalities in each of these fields.
