Centre approves Lady Hardinge Medical College redevelopment plan

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved an amount of Rs.387.31 crores for the redevelopment of Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) and associated hospitals.

The admission strength for under-graduate and post-graduate courses at the institute will also be increased to 200 and 127 seats from the existing 130 and 70 respectively over a period of three years.

As per an official release issued here today, the redevelopment should be completed "within a period of 32 months so as to comply with the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 at the cost of Rs.387.31 crores."

The Act stipulates reservations for admission for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes in Central Educational Institutions established, maintained or aided by the Central Government.

LHMC is the only college in Delhi offering medical education to girls. The college and hospital was formally opened by Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India, on February 17, 1916.
