Experienced docs help heart attack victims survive better

Washington: Heart attack victims have double the chances of survival especially if the hospital and their cardiologist have a strong track record in treating angioplasty and stenting, a new study has found. The study focussed on the effect of physician and hospital experience on patients who were treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In this procedure, a heart attack is treated by inflating a tiny balloon that clears away a blood clot cutting off the blood supply to the heart. Usually the interventional cardiologist also places an expandable metal mesh tube, or stent, inside the artery to prop it open. Today it is widely acknowledged that primary PCI is the safest and most effective treatment for heart attack - provided it can be accomplished quickly. As a result, many communities are establishing primary PCI programmes to provide rapid, local care. The interaction between physician and hospital experience is critically important, particularly in the case of an

Nanotechnology to help improve quality of paper, packaging materials

Sydney: Researchers are taking the help of nanotechnology to improve paper and packaging materials at low cost. Their finding, which involves the addition of a simple step to the paper making process, makes possible the development of new magnetic, electrically conducive or optically active specialist paper products. Doctoral student Aaron Small and supervisor Jim Johnston, professor at Victoria University, investigated cost-effective methods of printing or coating nanoparticles onto paper and packaging materials. Nanoparticles are tiny particles 10,000 times thinner than the average human hair. While nanoparticles are already used to coat materials such as fabric or clay particles, this is the first time the technology has been used with a New Zealand-grown and produced material such as 'kraft board fibres' (Pinus radiata), which are exported as newsprint grade paper internationally. "We know how to print nanoparticles that glow under ultra violet light but are invisible

Scientists develop self-sanitising plaster

Washington: Scientists are developing and testing new self-sanitising plaster with more powerful antibacterial effects than penicillin. The material could be used in wall coatings, paints, art works and other products. Liang-jie Yuan of Wuhan University in China and colleagues have developed the new, first-of-its kind plaster - formed from different ingredients from traditional gypsum plaster - that retains plaster's mechanical properties while having added antibacterial effects. Lab tests showed that the so-called "supramolecular" plaster has a "very broad" antibacterial spectrum, killing five types of disease-causing bacteria. When compared with penicillin, the plaster was more effective at controlling growth of four kinds of bacteria, including dangerous Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. "It can be expected that the supramolecular plaster can be used for building, painting, coating and carving, and the coat, brick, or art ware constructed by th

European Space Agency plans space junk detection system

Darmstadt: The European Space Agency (ESA) said Monday it hoped to set up its own detection system for space junk instead of relying on US radar to track the chunks of shattered satellites and spent rockets in earth orbit. Last week a US satellite accidentally hit an out-of-commission Russian satellite, scattering a trail of debris in space. Gaele Winters, who heads ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) at Darmstadt, Germany, said the debris would be a danger to ESA' own satellites in the same orbit. He said ESA need live data so its spacecraft could steer clear of the junk. Jean-Francois Kaufeler, head of the space junk monitoring department at ESOC, said, "Much more monitoring needs to be done." Experts are to meet March 30 to April 2 in Darmstadt to swap ideas on how. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) tracks about 13,000 objects in orbit, but ESA estimates hundreds of thousands of distinct items are in orbit. A fragment 1 centimetr
