JNU students step up protests against fee hike, power metres
New Delhi: Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday called for a strike in March against the university administration's proposed fee hike and what they alleged commercialisation of the campus.
"The protest is against the university authority's decision to install electricity metres in individual rooms, against the proposed fee hike, and problems regarding the implementation of reservation policies in admissions," Sandeep Singh, president of JNU Students Union (JNUSU), told sources.
"It is also against the insensitivity of administration towards ecology by renting campus for commercial purposes," he said.
Students started protests against the university authorities February 3. They intensified it in the last two days by calling for 48-hour strike on Monday. A mass sit-in has been planned for Tuesday night, in which more then 2,000 students are expected to participate.
The Teachers Association of the University has taken a neutral stand on the issue but written a letter to the JNU vice-chancellor demanding the talks between the university authorities and students.
"We had written a letter to the vice-chancellor for holding talks with the students. We have maintained a neutral view on the issue, but we support a dialogue between the students and the authorities. Our view will emerge only during and after the dialogue," Kamal Mitra Chenoy, professor at the School of International Studies, told sources.
JNUSU vice-president Shefalika Shekhar said the future protests would depend on the response on talks with the authorities. IANS
