* * o o o Net version of AIEEE exam aims at 1 lakh, gets 4,904

NEW DELHI: The pilot run of the online All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE) has received a lukewarm response with only 4,904 students registering themselves for the Net version while over 11 lakh aspirants will still be going for the traditional mode. The Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducts the exam, was planning to register 1 lakh students for the online version this year. Interestingly, the board is also planning to scale it up to a complete online examination in a year or two. But CBSE officials are upbeat and said the plans were in place to make it a complete online exam in the near future. "I don't see it as lukewarm. We have created a capacity of 1 lakh, but we are happy with the 5,000-odd registration, primarily because there are registrations from across 20 cities and none of our centres is going vacant. We will see increase in numbers in subsequent years," said CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi. CBSE officials are of t

Few takers for online engg entrance test in Chennai

CHENNAI: Over one lakh students were given the opportunity to take the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) online this year. Only 4,904 candidates -- less than 0.5% -- have registered to take the online exam, while 11.18 lakh are set to take the test through the conventional pen and paper mode on Sunday. The AIEEE is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education for admission to various National Institute of Technologies (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technologies (IIITs), deemed universities and for a few state institutions. "Students did not have sufficient practice to take the online test. So they decided to play it safe and opted for the pen-paper test. They felt that the conventional method is more convenient and involves fewer risks," said C Satish, senior principal of RMK Group of Schools. The organising body introduced the online version as a pilot project this year, with plans to make it completely computer-based in a couple of years.

Law varsity to introduce objective-type questions

HUBLI: Karnataka State Law University (KSLU, Hubli) has proposed to change the question paper pattern of all courses by introducing objective-type questions from the 2011-12 academic year. Once the Syndicate clears the proposal, 92 law colleges in the state, which come under KSLU ambit, will follow the new question paper pattern. KSLU, which is offering five-year, 10-semester BA LLB and three-year post-graduate programmes in LLB and LLM, is exploring possibilities to reform the exam system. At present, the university is having question papers with only subjective questions. Now it is planning to divide 100 marks between objective- and subjective-type questions with each getting 50 marks. Law graduates will have to take an exam conducted by Bar Council of India (BCI) to start their career as lawyers. But according to KSLU sources, the students have been finding it difficult to clear the exam as it comprises many objective-type questions. Students had earlier insisted KSLU authorities to

Education is an Issue in the Indian Fight against Polio

Recently one workshop sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) has brought the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) under the spotlights again. But there is good news. According to statistics from the Ludhiana District Immunization, from 55,000 cases of AFP last year, less than 50 cases suffered from polio. In 2011, health officials detected only one single polio case in India. The purpose of the workshop, which is part of the National Surveillance Program of WHO, organized in important cities such as Bathinda, Amritsar and Ludhiana, was to teach master-trainers ways to detect and eradicate an AFP case. Once these trainers are ready, they will offer workshops to their health staff too, in a continuous process of raising awareness among the population. Health officials alert for the lack of information from parent’s side to administer polio vaccine to their children. According to them, children under 15 years old who have suffered from paralysis should send two stool samples for tests

Panel for single exam option for all engineering institutes

A panel recommendation for a single entrance examination for all engineering institutions has thrust upon human resource development minister Kapil Sibal a key test — picking between his convictions and likely pressures from states and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Science secretary T Ramasami, head of a panel set up by Sibal to pencil a blueprint to replace India’s myriad engineering exams with a single test, on Thursday proposed three possible mechanisms to implement the plan, government sources confirmed. But Ramasami’s proposals - which are not final and will be worked on by the science secretary further — have set the stage for Sibal to try and convince state governments and elite institutions like the IITs to give up their entrance examinations, sources said. “It will not be easy. In Fact, this will be very, very difficult. But if he succeeds, it will be historic,” a senior official said. Unlike a proposal by an earlier panel set up by Sibal under IIT Kharagpur direc

Govt panel moots one test for all engineering institutes

A committee appointed by the government has recommended a single entrance examination for all engineering institutes after Class 12, replacing the multiple tests given currently, including the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Scores of this test, along with marks of the Class 12 Board exam, should be used to develop an index of scholastic level, the committee, headed by T Ramasami, secretary, Department of Science & Technology (DST), has recommended. Public opinion will be built over the next few months, and the proposal will be taken forward after a consensus is reached on feasibility and methodology. The exercise is likely to be complete by September. The committee is learnt to have proposed several formulae for collating scores of the Board exam and the new test. It is acknowledged that Boards vary widely in curricula, systems of marking and declaration of results — these differences would be factored in. The formulae w

No state quota in new IITs

BANGALORE: A human resource development ministry-appointed committee has rejected a key demand from different states to have domicile-based reservation in the 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) to be rolled out from next year. T V Mohandas Pai, who heads the expert committee to recommend criteria for selection of industry partners as well as proposals from states to set up 20 IIITs in public-private partnership mode, has not favoured the system of having state quota or giving preferential treatment to the state students in admissions to the top institutes. During a workshop convened by the HRD ministry last month, Pai clarified that the system followed by National Institutes of Technology -- of setting aside 50% of seats for state students -- would not be followed in the case of the new IIITs. Some states have made a vehement pitch for local quota, saying they were contributing more than half the amount to set up these institutes in the form of land. The minutes
