Few takers for online engg entrance test in Chennai

CHENNAI: Over one lakh students were given the opportunity to take the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) online this year. Only 4,904 candidates -- less than 0.5% -- have registered to take the online exam, while 11.18 lakh are set to take the test through the conventional pen and paper mode on Sunday.

The AIEEE is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education for admission to various National Institute of Technologies (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technologies (IIITs), deemed universities and for a few state institutions.

"Students did not have sufficient practice to take the online test. So they decided to play it safe and opted for the pen-paper test. They felt that the conventional method is more convenient and involves fewer risks," said C Satish, senior principal of RMK Group of Schools.

The organising body introduced the online version as a pilot project this year, with plans to make it completely computer-based in a couple of years. Despite lukewarm interest for the online test, the organizing body has put up detailed instructions for candidates on how to take the online exam and other test-specific instructions. A link to an online mock test has also been given to help students become familiar with the process. A mock test video -- similar to the one that guides candidates taking the Common Aptitude Test -- has been provided to clear the doubts of students.

Rama Sharma, media co-ordinator of the CBSE, said, "One should not measure the success of the exam by its number but by its conduct. And we are confident of the smooth conduct of the online exam. These are teething problems, but the success of CAT is an indication that the computer-based test (CBT) is the future."

Both the CBT and paper-based AIEEE tests will be conducted simultaneously across 20 cities and 81 cities respectively, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. The paper-based test will also be conducted in Dubai and Riyadh. Last year 10,65,100 candidates of the registered 11,18,148 candidates took the test in 86 cities.
