Prometric opens test centres, may go solo in conducting CAT

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ New Delhi: US-headquartered test-conducting firm Prometric Inc. opened its own test centres in India, paving the way for the company going solo in holding the Common Admission Test (CAT) for the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The company said, however, that “it will not drop its partners” in the near future. These include Everonn Education Ltd and MeritTrac. “We have now opened two centres of our own—managed and administered entirely by Prometric—unlike other centres which are of third-party vendors,” said Soumitra Roy, managing director of Prometric India. “We don’t know about the future, but will continue to expand our network.” Prometric, which has been conducting CAT online for the IIMs since 2009, is doing so in association with Everonn and Manipal education group-promoted MeritTrac. Roy said the situation at Everonn is being closely monitored. The Indian company’s managing director P. Kishore is in judicial c

MCI faces HC ire for quality of education

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ Expressing concern over the ‘merchandisation’ of medical education, the Delhi high court, on Thursday, slammed the Medical Council of India (MCI) for not doing enough to ensure that more colleges also resulted in improved health care in the country. The court warned that in the midst of unbridled mushrooming of medical colleges, the quality of teaching faculty, infrastructure etc was being ignored. The court issued a slew of directions to the MCI, while allowing the Sharda University and two other colleges to increase the intake of MBBS students from 100 to150, which was not being allowed by the MCI. “It is time for the MCI to reinvigorate the system to stop unequal growth of mediocre colleges aimed at commercialisation of medical education,” said said Justice Kailash Gambhir. The award instituted by the university in its silver jubilee year was presented to Azim Premji by Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal at a ceremony held here. Focusing on the basics of education through equity, Premji said: "You can't build skyscrapers in air. We need a solid foundation to address the demands." He stressed on the need of integrating IT with mainstream education which would then prove far more useful in disseminating education among adults than children. "Though children learn quickly, but what they require is good teachers," said Premji. "One area of use of IT which is not being exploited as yet is administration. Cambridge Medical English - a unique provider of English Language courses

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ United Kingdom: Cambridge Medical English is a unique provider of English Language courses designed only for doctors and taught, usually, at a Cambridge University college. It was founded by a team, disillusioned by the quality of other courses, and wanted to put the doctor at the heart of learning. They understand completely how doctors, leaving their homes in India, but excited about working in the UK, soon begin to feel embarrassed when communicating with patients and colleagues because of poor pronunciation. As Ashok Kureel, from Kanpur, now a successful anaesthetist, says:" I just didn't realise how difficult it would be for people to understand me. My English is excellent, but when I first started working in England I realised my accent was so bad that patients didn't understand me, and because of this they didn't trust me either. Then I was worried that maybe my colleagues didn't take me seriousl

IIT CAT 2013: Hard lessons for private coaching centres

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ The proposed common admission test format for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), could prove to be a damper for the Rs 10,000-crore coaching industry. Come 2013, the existing marking system will be replaced with one where the focus will be on the performance at the board exams. Candidates will be chosen, based on their ranks in the board exams and the number of students who appear for the exam under the concerned board. “For example, a student from CBSE would get more points for being ranked fourth, than a student from the West Bengal Board,” said Gautam Barua, director, IIT Guwahati. At present, IIT aspirants appear for the IIT Joint Entrance Exam (IIT JEE), which takes into account a student’s capabilities in physics, chemistry and mathematics (PCM). Board exams or class-XII results do not play a role in the final marking system. A student has to, howev

Cheapest PC launch on oct 5

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ HRD minister Kapil Sibal will launch the much-awaited Rs 1,500 computer cum access device, labelled as the cheapest computer in the world, for students on October 5. “The computer will be launched next month,” Sibal said. The new device is a seven-year-old project of the HRD ministry, started after MIT proposed to sell $100 laptops for school education in India. The ministry had rejected the MIT proposal and said it could produce a cheaper computer and formed a committee to indigenously develop it. Sibal said the new device, whose name will be announced at the launch, will perform all functions from browsing the web to gaming. “That's an enormously empowering tool,” he said, while giving away the first IGNOU-instituted Rajiv Gandhi International Prize for technology to Azim Premji. Sibal said IT does not help transcend boundaries but it is also an important tool to root out corruption. ht Some others blog of Mahara

Kids now don't know practical things

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ London: Modern day children do not know simple practical lessons like how to read a map, tie a knot or use a compass like their parents knew when they were of their age, a study has found. Learning to tie a knot or read a map were once some of the essential skills taught to children as they grew up. But such practical lessons are in danger of being forgotten, says the study by the Scout Association. Just one in five children -- or 20 percent -- in Britain could tie a reef knot or repair a flat bicycle tyre. If they went camping, only half of them knew how to put up a tent, use a compass or cook a meal, reports the Daily Express. However, nearly all the children could send an email and download music. This suggests learning practical skills has been replaced with modern techniques. Survival expert Bear Grylls, also the Chief Scout, has urged children to go back to basics and learn skills which will help them throughout life.

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ The new move to accept CAT (Common Admission Test) scores for admission to MBA programmes at IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology),IISc (Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore) and FMS ( Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi) has been met with mixed reactions. While CAT scores are considered for admissions to over 140 business schools in the country including the prestigious IIMs IITs,IISc and FMS had, until last year, conducted their own tests (in addition to considering CAT scores) for admission to their respective MBA programmes. Now, however, the IITs have unanimously decided to scrap JMET and accept CAT scores to select students for their MBA programmes. While this move was made in a bid to reduce the number of examinations, students and MBA aspirants feel that this has put them under more pressure. Australia to relax visa norms to woo students

More Education News: http://enteranceexamresults.blogspot.com/ Melbourne: Worried by continuing slide in the international students' numbers, the Australian government has decided to relax visa norms further. The decision has coincided with former New South Wales minister Michael Knight's report that calls for loosening the onerous immigration requirements for international students. The government has accepted all 41 recommendations made by the 'Knight Review'. These recommendations include similar assessment level for all international students regardless of their country of passport. The students would also need to show A$36,000 less to get Australian student visa. The rising Australian dollar and global financial crisis have dealt a serious blow to the universities and vocational education colleges in the country as international students, especially from India and China, have started shunning Australia.
