IIT-K to develop satellite in collaboration with ISRO

Kanpur: A micro satellite named 'Jugnu' being developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) with an aim to assemble information regarding flood, drought and disaster management is in the last stage of completion.

"The satellite is being developed by the IIT-K in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). After the completion the satellite will be handed over to ISRO in November for further test and launch," said Prof. Sanjoy Govind Dhande, director IIT-K.

An MoU was penned in August 2008, between the IIT-K and ISRO to develop a micro satellite dedicated for agricultural purpose.

"Our mechanical engineering department team needs another 6-7 months to complete the project," added Prof. Dhande.

"An amount of Rs2.5 crore has been spent to develop the satellite 'Jugnu'. Our scientists have developed indigenous technology to develop the satellite," further said Prof. Dhande.

The hi-tech cameras fitted in the satellite will send photographs regarding agriculture, weather and soil to the base station, he said.
