Fifth Convocation held at IP University
New Delhi: About 9,246 students were conferred their degrees (in-absentia) at the fifth Convocation of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), held today in the capital.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was Padma Shri Prof. P. Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
In his Convocation address, Prof. Balaram said, "Interdisciplinary skills are essential for solving all the major scientific and technological issues that confront us, whether in the area of modern biomedical and agricultural research, pharmaceuticals and diagnostics or solar energy and climate change."
He also emphasized that the assurance of quality in education is only possible if there is some measure of regulation as well.
Mr. Tejendra Khanna, Lt. Governor, Delhi and Chancellor of GGSIPU bestowed degrees on 19 Ph.D. scholars, on the occasion.
Applauding the University, he said, "It is a matter of pride that in a short span of 10 years, GGSIPU has made a mark for itself at a national and international level".
Gold medals were awarded by Prof. Balaram to 61 students of the University for topping in their respective academic programmes. In addition, 216 students of Master of Technology (M.Tech.) were conferred their degrees and one student, Ms. Shruti Gupta, MCA was given the award for 'Exemplary Performance' by the Vice Chancellor.
The highlight of this year's Convocation was the award of degrees to 18 foreign students, who have successfully completed their 'Master's in Human Resource Planning & Development' programme, offered by the Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR), in affiliation with the University.
These students belong to different countries like Maldives, Sudan, Nepal, Malawi, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Lesotho, Cambodia, Bhutan, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Dominica.
Among the foreign students, the 'University's Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit' was conferred on Mr. Wakhungu Patrick Juma from Kenya, who also received the 'Institute's President's Medal and Certificate of Merit'.
The 'Director's Medal and Certificate of Merit' was bestowed on Mrs. Lieketseng Kopung Makoko from Lesotho.
Earlier, while presenting the annual report of the University Prof. Dilip K. Bandyopadhyay, Vice Chancellor, GGSIPU informed that GGSIPU has added several new courses during the 2008-09 session like B.Tech (Tool Engineering), Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics, M.Tech. (Nano Science and Technology), BBA LL.B and M.Sc. (Biodiversity & Conservation), to mention some.
The total number of academic programmes offered by the University presently stands at 75, with an annual intake of over 13,800 and total strength of more than 47,000 students.
He said, "The University has grown quantitatively and now it is the time for consolidation and transcription of the philosophy of Total Quality Management (TQM) into each and every action of this University, be it academics, research or extension."
