IITs best, need more institutes: NASSCOM chief

BANGALORE: Disagreeing with Union Minister Jairam Ramesh's remarks on IITs and IIMs, NASSCOM President Som Mittal today said these institutions were of the highest standards.

The number of MNCs coming to India to hire professionals from these institutions bear testimony to the standards of education they impart, Mittal told reporters here.

"I think we have some very good institutions in India and IITs have been bright example. Many multinationals come here to hire professionals from IITs and IIMs. This is a tribute to the whole set up," the chief of the premier trade body said.

Ramesh had recently remarked that the faculties of IITs and IIMs were not world class.

Mittal stressed the need for establishing more IITs and IIMs in the country and added "We need to add more faculty in IITs and across the engineering education system and need to further improve the quality of education."

He urged the US to 'extensively' reform its Visa policy in tune with the globalised world. The US remained the biggest market for Indian IT industry and it was concerned over the recent Visa issue. "The Indian IT industry offers the best talent and solutions for US and it should be viewed differently than ordinary immigrant issues," he said.

He said the recent allegation on an Indian IT major's immigration practices was related to 'one company' and a detailed discussion in the matter was necessary."This incident has been made big. We need to deliberate on it. We should let the company put forward its explanations."
