High scores in CBSE math to raise DU cutoffs
New Delhi: With 1449 students receiving merit certificates in mathematics in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 examinations this year, it is being speculated that admission to popular courses such as B.Com, B.Com (Honors) and Economics (Hons.) in Delhi University (DU) colleges will be extremely tough this year.
Only 749 students had received merit certificates in the CBSE Class 12 Mathematics exam by scoring 99% marks or higher.
CBSE figures this year have revealed that 2265 students in Delhi alone have scored 98% and above in mathematics this year. As maths is a compulsory subject for B.Com (Hons) in most colleges and for B.Com in some colleges, students aspiring to opt for these courses will have to face much competition.
Also, various college sources have alleged that the cutoff percentage for Economics (Hons) is also expected to be quite high this year as mathematics is a compulsory subject for the economics programme as well.
Principal of Shri Ram College of Commerce P.C. Jain said that the cutoffs for B.Com (Hons.) and B.Com as well as Economics (Hons.) were going to be quite high this year.
"This is going to impact the admissions. Apart from CBSE, we also have the Maharashtra and Rajasthan board results and we have observed that high scorers are on the rise in state boards as well," he said.
As there are no pre-admission forms this year, colleges that are not opting for online registration will depend on the data of results and past experiences for preparing their cutoffs. 66 students in Delhi had scored 98% and above in this year's CBSE economics paper and 167 students had scored 98% and above in accountancy.
