How to make IIT dreams come true
For every IIT aspirant, scoring high at the 'JEE' or Joint Entrance Exam, sets the foundation for a bright career. Therefore, it is extremely important to approach JEE preparation in the right manner, under the guidance of an established and reputed training institute with a proven track record. The entrance exam results last week highlighted several noteworthy trends.
Vishwas Deshpande, Managing Director, Vidyalankar Classes, points out that the awareness of this exam has certainly increased over the years and more and more Mumbai students are eager to crack this exam.
"As everybody is aware the IIT JEE is the most difficult exam with the selection rate at only about 2 ½ percent. The students who decide early, say 8th standard, and start working diligently towards this exam seem to be doing well in the grand final. The analytical thinking developed during these initial years of their exposure to the subjects of Maths, Physics and Chemistry goes a long way in creating the right skill set required to crack this difficult exam."
According to him, getting selected amongst the 5 lakh students who appear, itself is no mean feat. In that sense all the selected candidates are toppers. "Of course inherent aptitude is vital. But this coupled with structured coaching does improve the chances of selection substantially. Students need to develop not only the right skill set but also the right mindset for this kind of exam.IIT JEE exam tests the inter-related fundamental concepts," he says.
Explaining the key parameters for selecting the right Institute, Vishwas emphasizes that the credibility of an institute depends on its faculty. "Strong faculty is the single most important factor in deciding the right Institute. It is important that students are not subjected to change of faculty during the course. Besides faculty, the infrastructure of the institute and the administrative back up support the Institute provides are also equally important. In academics, grey hair is always associated with wisdom and hence Institutes which have withstood the test of time do get respected and preferred," he says.
Advising IIT aspirants about achieving their goals, he says that on joining IITs two things can happen; either good or very good."But getting selected is not at all easy. IIT JEE is a test of not only academic strength but also mental strength & intellectual stamina. Students who remain focused alone do better. Like everywhere, it is 1 % inspiration and 99 % perspiration."
Similarly, Lokesh Khandelwal, Co-founder, Resonance, shares that the qualities required to be a topper at the IIT entrance are an early start towards competition aptitude like NTSE in 8th, Olympiads, KVPY etc. "The student should be systematic, attentive, motivated and have good grasping level. It is important to be consistent and confident to make it among toppers, one must assess skills at all India level periodically. IIT aspirants should not feel high or low on their marks in 10th.
There are numerous instances when a student under proper guidance and training has been able to get a coveted seat in top IIT. Student should be focused, punctual, attentive and continuously be in touch with their teachers to keep improving their performance. It is like a 'tapasya' of one or two years, but it can lead you to not only secured future in terms of everything but give you a chance to serve humanity."
Explaining the key parameters to be considered while selecting an institute, he feels that choosing the right guide is one of the most crucial aspects in the success of the student in JEE. "While deciding upon a good institute, the first thing which should come to your mind would be, 'Who are the Teachers?' Many institutes employ visiting faculties or IIT students to teach the students. One has to look at how many full time faculties there are in the institute. What are their qualifications? What is the average teaching experience of the whole academic team?"
"Secondly one should check the quality of study material. In various institutes, different lecturers follow different books, thereby confusing the students about what to study. There should be a proper Research & Development team to innovate and design new problems every time. There should be proper academic planning in place, and should be followed by all the staff members across their centres."
"The institute should give equal importance to all the students joined them. Many institutes segregate students in the so called, "XL Batches" or "Merit Batches" and teach the students. All the focus is only on such students and the rest of the lot is left to study things on their own. There should be a competitive spirit amongst the students, but the institute should not discriminate between good and bad students. The efforts from the teachers should be same for all types of students."
"Lastly, one can check the quality of study based on the institutes' drop out ratio. As a matter of fact, after completing one year of study many students decide to drop out or stop preparing for JEE in every institute. The institute can make tall claims in terms of their student strength but end of day how many are going to appear are very less. I remember an institute in Mumbai once had 1500 students in the XI std. But when the results of that batch were published after 2 years, the institute showed "x" no. of selections out 200 something students. That means out of 1500 who joined them in 11th only 200 continued in 12th. This comes out to be a drop out ratio of 86%. The drop out ratio of any institute shows the quality of education imparted inside the classroom," Lokesh points out.
