Stephen Hawking to give up Cambridge chair

London: British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking will retire from teaching next year, the University of Cambridge has announced. Hawking, who suffers from a motor neuron disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that has left him almost paralysed and only able to communicate through a computer, will hand over the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics to a successor in the new academic year, a statement said early on Friday. Hawking, who reaches the Lucasian chair's retirement age of 67 in January, will continue his research at the university. The Lucasian Chair of Mathematics is renowned and was occupied by Isaac Newton in the 17th century. Hawking has held the chair for almost 30 years. He is one of the most famous cosmologists in the world, and author of the popular science book A Brief History of Time, which has sold nine million copies, according to publishers Bantam Dell. Govt to setup Ayurvedic institute on lines of AIIMS

Delhi: The Central Government has approved the establishment of an All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) at Sarita Vihar, New Delhi as a Centre of Excellence focused on fundamental research, drug safety evaluation, standardization, quality control and scientific validation of Ayurvedic medicine. The institute would also offer post-graduate and doctoral courses in the aforesaid disciplines. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, Mrs. Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Health & family Welfare said that the institute will have a 200-bed research and referral hospital for facilitating clinical research. "The All India Institute of Ayurveda will be setup on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)", Lakshmi added. It would be fully functional by the end of the Eleventh Five Year Plan i.e. by March, 2012. Govt launches new scheme for girl's hostels

New Delhi: The Central Government has launched a new scheme for the construction and running of girls' hostels for students of secondary and higher secondary schools . The scheme will replace the centrally sponsored scheme for 'Strengthening of Boarding and Hostel Facilities for Girls', which was implemented during the 10th Five Year Plan. While the earlier scheme provided for financial assistance to voluntary organizations only for running girls' hostels, the revised scheme envisages financial assistance for both construction and running of girls' hostels by State Governments, in educationally backward blocks. The revised scheme provides for construction of 3,500 hostels, each with a capacity of 100 inmates, through State Governments in the educationally backward blocks in the country in addition to recurring grants to meet the needs of inmates. Bangalore based hospital to set up medical college in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Bangalore based Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital will set up a medical college in Gujarat on an investment of Rs.2.5 billion ($507 million). A 1,500 bed hospital is planned as part of the project that will come up in the state capital Ahmedabad. Chandil Kumar, medical administrator of the hospital, told sources "We are working on the project and focusing on getting necessary approvals." A fact sheet brought out by the Gujarat government ahead of January 2009 Vibrant Gujarat Summit said the Bangalore hospital's project is part of the special effort being made to expand medical education facilities in the state. Thiruvananthapuram: City-based healthcare products manufacturer Hindustan Latex Ltd (HLL) has entered into a tie-up with the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) to set up a technology business incubator, a company official said here on Tuesday. The HLL spokesperson told sources the agreement for setting up the incubator at the RGCB in Thiruvananthapuram to carry out research work was inked last month. HLL, a mini-ratna company, achieved turnover of Rs.2.44 million during 2006-07 and it has set a target of Rs.10 billion by 2010. New Delhi: The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has urged the Medical Council of India (MCI) to re-evaluate and amend regulations allowing medical colleges to end the use of animals in their curricula and opt for alternatives to animal experimentation. Drawing the attention of MCI, a government body that regulates medical colleges in the country, to the fact that majority of medical schools in USA, Canada and the UK have ended the use of animals in their curricula, PETA said prominent medical associations now encourage medical schools to replace the use of animals with non-animal teaching methods. India's first vaccine for cervical cancer launched

Kolkata MSD Pharmaceuticals India, part of US pharma giant Merck & Co, on Monday launched India's first vaccine to help prevent cervical cancer. "Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women in India, well ahead of breast cancer," said Anjana Narain, MSD's director vaccine, during the launch here. The vaccine, Gardasil, was launched in the US in 2006. In India, each dose of the vaccine will cost Rs.2,800, and one needs to take three doses. Narain said low awareness of this type of cancer is the sole cause behind high mortality rate among women. Govt to setup 1500 new ITIs - Oscar Fernandes

New Delhi: The Planning Commission has given its "In-principle" approval for opening of 1500 new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and 5000 Skill Development Centres in un-serviced blocks across the country. This information was given by Minister of State for Labour and Employment Mr. Oscar Fernandes in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today. With an aim to improve the supply of skilled professionals, the Central Government has approved the up-gradation of 500 Government ITIs - 100 with domestic funding and 400 with World Bank assistance. The up-gradation of the remaining 1396 Government ITIs through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode has also been approved. Fernandes further said that the establishment of new ITIs and strengthening of the existing ITIs in Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir and the North-Eastern states has been given top priority.
