Admission Notification for (Full Time/Part-Time) Ph.D Programmes (Session Spring 2013)
Applications are invited from interested candidates for admission to full-time/part- time Ph.D programmes in the following Departments and Groups
Architecture, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Applied Mechanics, Applied Physics, Bio-Medical Instrumentation, Bio-Technology, Centre of Excellence in Climatology, Chemical and Polymer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Management, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Production Engineering, Remote Sensing and Space Engineering and Rocketry
Eligibility Criteria: An applicant for admission to the Ph.D programme of this institute shall possess M.Phil/ Master’s degree in Technology/Engineering/Pharmacy/Management/Architecture or equivalent, with a minimum of 60% marks at Master’s level for general candidates (55% in case of full time sponsored candidates with a minimum of three years professional experience, and SC/ST candidates); or
M.Phil/Master’s degree in Science/Humanities with a minimum of 55% marks at Master’s level for general candidates (50% in case of full-time sponsored candidates with a minimum of three years professional experience, and SC/ST candidates); or
Any other discipline approved by the technical council of the institute from time to time
Applicants with B.Tech/B.E./B.Sc Engineering/B.Arch/B.Pharm/MBBS having a minimum of 70% marks at graduation level for general candidates (65% in case of full-time sponsored candidates with a minimum of three years professional experience, and 55% for SC/ST candidates) may also apply
However, an applicant having professional qualifications such as Associate Member of Institution of Engineers (India)/ Aeronautical Society of India or equivalent may be considered for admission to the Ph.D programme only after he/she completes the M.E./M.Tech programme of any recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks at Master’s level (55% in case of full-time sponsored candidates with a minimum of three years professional experience, and SC/ST candidates)
Candidates must have adequate proficiency in written and spoken English
Foreign nationals, excluding ex-students and faculty/staff members of BIT International centres, possessing any of the qualification shall be required to clear TOEFL or any other equivalent examination prescribed by the technical council of the institute from time to time to become eligible for admission to the Ph.D programme
Candidates with foreign diplomas should see the EdCIL website for equivalence www.edcil.co.in, and if required should obtain an equivalence certificate well in advance from the evaluation division of the AIU website www.aiuweb.org
In case any board/university awards grades instead of marks, the calculation of equivalent marks would be based on the procedure prescribed by the board/university
Entrance Test: The Ph.D entrance test will be held on 22nd February, 2013, 09.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m. at the Institute main building on the Institute’s campus at Mesra, Ranchi-835215
Those candidates who wish to join the Ph.D programme (SP-2013) at any of the extension centre, the venue for the test and interviews will be the same centre, except for BIT extension centre Lalpur, the test and interview for BIT extension centre, Lalpur will be conducted at Mesra
The candidate must indicate the centre for the test and interview in their application form
Selection Procedures: Selection to the Ph.D programmes would be based on previous academic record, performance in a written test followed by an interview
Fellowships: Candidates who have qualified in CSIR-NET/BRNS/NBHM/other selections would avail the fellowships directly from the respective organizations
A limited number of institute fellowships are available for 3 years (extendable to 1 more year) at Mesra/ other campuses
The quantum of the institute fellowship to be awarded would be Rs 18,000/- p.m. for the disciplines of Engineering, Pharmacy and Architecture, and Rs 16,000/- p.m. for other departments
A limited number of TEQIP fellowships are also available for few departments at Mesra
How to apply: To apply for the Ph.D programme (SP-2013) of the Institute, eligible candidates must download and print the application form available on website www.bitmesra.ac.in, and send the completed form along with two recent colour photographs (one pasted on the form and one attached by paper clip to the form), with photocopies of all marksheets and certificates, and a crossed demand draft for Rs 2,500/- (Rs 1,200/- for SC/ST) (non-refundable) in favour of Birla Institute of Technology, payable at Ranchi, in a stout A4 size envelope by speed post/courier to the office of Dean, Admission and Academic Coordination, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi-835215, positively by the due date

Candidates must enclose photocopies of the following documents with the duly completed application form; pass certificate and marksheet of class 10; marksheet of class 12/intermediate or equivalent; certificate and marksheets of graduation; certificate and marksheets of post graduation; college leaving certificate and migration certificate
The last date for receipt of completed application form is 31st January, 2013, 04.00 p.m.
