Delhi University begins sale of admission forms 2012
New Delhi: For aspirants of higher learning, all city roads led to the Delhi University (DU) Monday as the sale of admission forms began. Anxious as well as excited students were seen thronging the sale counters at the university - counted among the top varsities in the country.
The common pre-admission forms can also be availed online till June 18 for General and Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates, university "General and OBC students can fill up online forms also. We are also posting regular updates and information bulletins on our Facebook page," a DU official said.
The university's Facebook page has over one million followers.
"The forms will be available at head post-offices and 10 colleges of the university, and can also be submitted there," added the official.
Nearly 54,000 seats will be up for grabs in around 70 colleges affiliated to Delhi University. An estimated 125,000 students had applied for various courses in the university last year.
While the university conducted counseling sessions for students, they and their parents seem to be worried by the soaring minimum levels of marks for admissions - called "cut-offs" in campus parlance - and hunt for a seat in a branded college.
A DU aspirant, 18-year-old Shivansh Tripathi said he hoped to get admission to a top brass college.
"Although SRCC's 100 percent cut-off marks last year still scares me, I have decided to apply only to the top brass colleges," said Tripathi, who has secured 92 percent marks in commerce.
Sri Ram College of Commerce's (SRCC) 100 percent cut-off for the first B.Com (Honours) list for those from the non-commerce stream had evoked strong reactions, with even union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal calling it "irrational".
The first cut-off list specifying the minimum percentage of marks required for admission to a particular course and a college, will be put out June 26.
For the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates, four centres have been allocated to accept their registrations during this period. The candidates in the reserved category need to register at the Arts Faculty in the North or South campus, or Rajdhani College or Shyam Lal College between 9.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Physically handicapped candidates have been given 15 days from June 4 to 18 to register at the office of the Dean, Students Welfare, in north campus. IANS
