For some, B Com too tough to even clear compartment exam

CHANDIGARH: In a surprising trend across Panjab University and its affiliated colleges, one third of students who appear in B Com compartment exam, particularly first year, either fail or get compartment again.

As many as 374 of the 1,261 students who appeared in the compartment exam in September 2011 got compartment again while 21 failed the exam. A similar trend was witnessed in B.Com II but thankfully, in third year, the takers of compartment exam are few.

Experts say the reason behind this trend is that in first year, the compartment or failed candidates are too many in number because students find themselves not competent enough to pursue B Com further by September and drop out or opt for BA instead.

"Such cases are particularly high in rural districts around Abhor, Dasua and other areas in Punjab. Students hailing from these areas feel the burden of commerce course since it involves several practical assignments and has 5 lengthy subjects. Those who do not clear their compartment exams also drop out and subsequently, the numbers come down in B Com II and B Com III," said Karamjeet Singh, PU fellow and commerce faculty member at University Business School, PU. "Another reason for such poor result in compartment exams is that students tend to rate commerce steam better than BA or even B Sc in some cases from market and job point of view. But when they actually get enrolled, they find it hard to cope," he added.

Among the undergraduate courses across all streams, students appearing in bachelors in business administration (BBA) and bachelors of commerce (B.Com first year) fair poorly in April exams as well.
