DU semester exams: Student with 78% attendance barred from taking exam

NEW DELHI: Semester exams in DU are not going smoothly. The number of students barred from taking the exams due to a shortage of attendance crossed 350 on Tuesday. Instances of students being at the receiving end of college authorities' negligence are also coming to the fore.

It emerged on Monday that Dyal Singh College had barred a student with 78% attendance from sitting for his first exam due to miscalculation of attendance. The records were scrutinized after a teacher found him crying inside the college and the student was allowed to appear for subsequent papers.

Meanwhile, group of teachers from Dyal Singh College met the deputy dean of students' welfare. They requested the university to take a lenient view and allow the students to sit for the exams. Naveen Gaur, a faculty member of Dyal Singh College, said, "Last year, the same rules were followed but no student was detained."

The colleges continue to differ on attendance rules as Zakir Husain (evening), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Dyal Singh College, Acharya Narendra Dev College and Janki Devi Memorial College are among those barring students from taking the exams, while colleges like Ramjas, Hindu, Zakir Husain (morning), Daulat Ram, Gargi, Kamala Nehru and Ramanujan have decided against it.

While the colleges which detained students cited the university's notification, those that allowed them to sit for exams despite short attendance argued that the last date of handing over attendance records was November 18 and the exams were scheduled for November 23, leaving little time to tabulate the figures and display them for five days on noticeboards according to DU rules.

Even the students are protesting. Those who have been detained allege discrimination as their counterparts in other colleges have been allowed to sit for the exams despite being short on attendance. "The DU administration has been keeping mum for the past six days. Why these double standards?" said a detained student of DDU.

While the dean of students' welfare refused to comment, saying only the spokesperson of the university will do so, the registrar of DU could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
