AHMEDABAD: Medical Council of India (MCI) is reported to have written to the Union law ministry stating that conducting National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) will not be possible this year, sources said. NEET was to be introduced by the MCI as a common entrance exam for admission in MBBS colleges all over the country.

The council will make a formal decision about not holding the NEET exam from this year soon, sources added. MCI has decided to offer NEET following SC directives but the plan met with lot of opposition from several states with many chief ministers writing against the test. MCI has expressed that NEET cannot be implemented from this year as there was a complete lack of consensus.

What's more, petitions were filed in the high courts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir and stay orders granted against organizing NEET. There are also reports of pressure from the South lobby which have big stakes in self-financed colleges and would suffer losses in terms of capitation fee if admissions are granted on basis of a single test.

In Gujarat too, the NEET met with severe opposition not only from the state government but also from parents of students of class XI and XII (science) who actively campaigned against the entrance test. Gujarat's prime opposition against NEET was that not conducting the test in local language would be unfair to the 70% students who study in Gujarati medium.

Moreover, there is 30-35% difference between the NEET and the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) syllabus, which will not offer the local students a level playing field.

Gujarat had said that it will join NEET only if the test is offered in Gujarati language and the difference between the two syllabuses is bridged. In addition, Gujarat had said that it will join the exam only after 2012.

Academicians said that NEET is a landmark step in the medical education and it should be implemented.
