New Delhi, July 28: Nearly 85 per cent respondents who gave their opinion on a proposal for a common engineering entrance test across the country replied in the affirmative in an online poll.

In total, 2,063 people participated in the poll. Of them, 947 responded to the question on the single engineering entrance test and gave their opinions. Eighty-five per cent favoured the single-test plan.

A committee led by science and technology secretary T. Ramasami conducted the online opinion poll on the proposed National Test Scheme. A web page was launched in May with the public opinion poll feature seeking responses from students, parents and teachers.

“It is the need of the hour. It saves time as people need not sit for more (than one) exam, saves application (form) costs, and reduces stress of the parents and their wards,” said Chira Sundarrajan, who polled in favour of the single-test format, which would replace the IIT-JEE also if it gets the green light.

The poll also asked if the board examination performance of students should be given weightage in the entrance test. Around 800 people responded, of which 66 per cent were in agreement.

Another question was on whether the entrance test should have questions to test the aptitude of the candidate. Again, around 800 responded, of which 70 per cent said the exam should be a mix of questions to test general intelligence and subject-specific knowledge.
