New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will be honoring its founder, Education Minister K.C. Pant in a special silver jubilee felicitation function on October 1, 2010.
K.C Pant, former Union Minister who had been responsible for piloting the IGNOU bill in the year 1985, has given his consent to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. The function will be held at the IGNOU Convention Centre.
IGNOU's first Vice-Chancellor was Late Prof. G. Ram Reddy, succeeded by Prof V.C. Kulandai Swamy, Prof. Ram Takwale, Prof. A.W Khan and Prof. H.P Dixit.
IGNOU is in its 25 years of existence has created a record of sorts at both the national and international levels.
IGNOU was promoted in 1985 to offer higher education opportunities to students from all sections of society, particularly the marginalized and disadvantaged living in rural areas.
Twenty-five years on, IGNOU has remained true to its founders' vision and has played a significant role in democratizing higher education and providing access to millions of students who cannot enroll in formal higher education institution.
India's conventional colleges and universities don't have the capacity to cope with the scale of the higher education challenge confronting the country and distance education powered by new information communication technologies (ICTs) has to be used to supplement conventional territory education.
"During the past 25 years IGNOU has demonstrated that quality higher education can be delivered the flexible Open Distance Learning (ODL) models, which we have greatly improved by harnessing the full power of ICTs. The union government has identified IGNOU as an important partner of reaching the national goal of 15 percent enrolment in higher education by 2015," said IGNOU vice chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai.
