IIT Punjab to start working from its new campus on Aug 20

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Punjab (IIT-RPR) will start functioning from its new campus on August 20, after a year of parenting at the IIT Delhi (IIT-D).

The institute will function with last year's batch and the new batch of around 240 students in three disciplines from Roopnagar (formerly Ropar), around 60 km from Chandigarh.

"The institute will start operation with 11 teachers and around 15 professors of IIT-D will continue to help them in taking classes," IIT-D Director Surendra Prasad said on Friday.

He said though the institute is starting out of a polytechnic building, the facilities are not bad.

"I am telling you, the campus is not bad. They have hostels, good classrooms and good laboratories as well," he added.

Prasad said 25 were selected for teaching posts but the institute shall start with 11 teachers.

"The number (of teachers) will certainly be good in two months time."

He told reporters that 1,419 students are graduating with under-graduate and post-graduate degrees at this year's convocation of IIT-D.

"Besides 1,419 students, we are awarding certificates to 181 PhD scholars - a 23pc increase than last year," said Bala Krishnan, dean of post-graduate studies at IIT-D.

The degrees will be awarded in two days beginning today. IANS.
