New Delhi: A Medical Council of India (MCI) team will investigate the issue of capitation fees demanded by two medical colleges based in Tamil Nadu.

This was announced by Ketan Desai, Acting President, MCI after a meeting of the council held here.

"We have decided to send teams to Chennai to probe the allegations of capitation fees issue," said Ketan Desai.

Officials of Shree Balaji Medical College and Sri Ramachandra University were exposed demanding capitation fees in the range of Rs 12-20 lakh to give admission to students through sting operation done by a news channel.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has served notice to the medical colleges to explain the matter after the allegation came into light.

A committee has also been appointed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to probe into the matter.
