DU Colleges to offer short-term course in ICT
New Delhi: Several colleges under Delhi University (DU) will now teach short-term course in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) offered by the Delhi University - National Thermal Power Corporation (DU-NTPC) resource centre.
The DU-NTPC centre offers short-term certificate courses in sign language interpretation, communicative English, ICT and disability & human rights.
Several colleges of the University will choose two non-teaching staff to undergo a 15-day course module to learn the ICT software.
The staff has to undergo a written exam following which they will be conferred a certificate, enabling them to start offering the course in their respective college.
The decision was taken last week at a meeting of the University's Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC).
"The first batch for these courses is already over. We were keen to de-centralize the programme on ICT. This course offers all the software required for visually challenged students," said Dr. Komal Kamra, faculty member at S.G.T.B. Khalsa College and a member of EOC.
"Lots of colleges have approved of this arrangement. This will empower students to study this course from their respective colleges. Every college will assign two computers dedicated to the needs of the differently-abled students. The staff will finish their training by the summer vacation after which the course will be available at colleges," added Dr. Kamra.
The EOC will now concentrate on "external environments" after they have completed accessing audit report of every building in the University.
"Eight places on the North Campus have been identified and we will try to make them wheelchair-savvy, construct ramps and install guiding tiles," she said.
A 20-seater yellow coloured specially modified low-floor bus that can house four wheelchairs will be unveiled by the EOC soon.
The bus will connect major landmarks on the campus and will be available free of cost to the differently-abled students and the teaching staff of the University.
