Existing maritime institutes to be merged with Indian Maritime University

Chennai: The Indian Maritime University (IMU) will come up in Chennai to standardize the quality of private institutions imparting maritime education and training; through affiliation and academic supervision.

The IMU will have its campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam and will be setup on the patterns of the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Switzerland.

The existing seven maritime training and research institutes, both Government and Government-aided, will be merged with the IMU.

Maritime studies, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies including marine science and technology and marine environment will be promoted by the university.

The maritime varsity is also expected to solve the bottlenecks faced by training institutes and colleges in the maritime sector for university affiliation.

To showcase the various facets of Indian Maritime Industry, the Central Government will also establish a National Maritime Complex at Chennai.

"A society has been formed in November this year to fulfill the requirements of maritime sector by providing maritime related and integrated services at a single location", a Government official said.

"The complex would act as a maritime hub of the region and act as a power house of the global maritime trade. It will preserve maritime heritage and key ancient maritime traditions, which otherwise might get lost", the official added.
