Rubber Technology Courses in India

The subject that deals with the processing of latex, natural rubber or synthetic rubber to transform them into useful products is known as Rubber Technology. This subject also deals with different types of rubbers, their properties, and descriptions of formulation of rubber compounds. The methods involved in the processing of rubber are vulcanization, mastication and calendering. Crude rubber is brought into a shape for forming the final products once it goes through these processes. With the increasing number of automobiles and growing use of rubber in various industries, rubber technology is becoming a lucrative career option for students. Rubber Technology Courses in India are available at a few institutes and colleges.

A bachelor's degree in rubber technology usually in the form of a B.E or B.Tech can be pursued in several institutions across the country. A B.Sc degree, though rare can be pursued at a limited number of institutions. This can be followed by a 2years M.Tech degree course.

Qualifications: The minimum qualifications required for pursuing a bachelor's degree course in rubber technology is passing the XIIth standard exams securing second division marks with Physics, Chemistry, Math and Biology as the subjects. Admissions to these courses are generally through the various entrance examinations for engineering held at the all India level.

For admissions to M.Tech course in Rubber Technology a candidate must have a B.Tech or equivalent degree such as AMIE in polymer science and Rubber technology, Chemical Engineering or M.Sc in Polymer Chemistry with a valid GATE score.

Institutions offering Rubber Technology Courses in India

Name of Institute Course Duration
Gujarat University, Navarangpura, Ahmedabad BE Rubber Engineering 4 years
Anna University, Sardar Patel Road, Guindy, Chennai B.Tech Rubber Tech 4 years
Cochin University of Science & technology, Kochi B.Tech Polymer science and Rubber Technology 3 years
Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala B.Sc Rubber Technology 3 years
IIT-Kharagpur, West Bengal M. Tech Rubber Technology 2 years

Benefits: Although about 6,000 rubber units are active in the country, very few people are aware of Rubber Technology as a career option. Rubber industry is growing in stature due to the high demands of tyres, whether high-tech tires of airplanes or tires of bicycles. Rubber is also being used in car decorations and in other industries.

Scopes in India: This is comparatively a new field of action and the demands for trained personnel are soaring high in the present times. Students of Rubber Technology are generally recruited in tire companies like Apollo Tyres, J. K. Tyres, MRF and Ceat among others. As rubber is an important part of the semi conductor industry, huge recruitments are also occurring here. Other industries like those making waterproof wares like Duckback (Kolkata) also recruit students from this field. Other industries which hire personnel from this field are Gas Authority of India Limited, HCL technologies and Haldia Petrochemicals.

Scopes Abroad: International tire companies and industries are tapping talents from India. Rubber processing units of western countries like France, U.K and U.S are also recruiting trained professionals form India. The pay is much higher compared to those of the Indian companies.
