Indian Maritime University gets its first VC

Chennai: Director of the National Maritime Academy (Chennai), Dr. P. Vijayan has been appointed the first Vice-Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University (IMU).

Vijayan has been appointed the Vice-Chancellor of IMU initially for a period of three years.

The decision was announced here on Sunday by Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu.

"The cost of the project, which involves setting up the headquarters of the University in Chennai and campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Vishakapatnam, is Rs.245 crores", Baalu said.

The decision was also conveyed to President Pratibha Patil, who is the Visitor of the varsity.

As reported by www.IndiaEduNews.net earlier, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the IMU in December 2008. The foundation stone for the administrative block for the varsity will also be laid down by him in the same month.

Maritime studies, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies including marine science and technology and marine environment will be promoted by the university.

It is also expected to solve the bottlenecks faced by training institutes and colleges in the maritime sector for university affiliation.

The Indian Maritime University will come up in Chennai on the patterns of the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Switzerland.
