KATHMANDU – REGIONAL MODEL SAARC CONFERENCE 2010

Kathmandu Regional Model SAARC Session and Panel Discussion is a platform for a large number of dedicated youth from eight countries in the SAARC region to voice their visions of a future SAARC society (directly to key policy makers). This would include providing a youth perspective on some of the crucial issues impacting the region. It will act as a medium of youth collaboration amongst the youth of the SAARC region and encourage them to indulge themselves in a range of social actions that benefit their community, and ultimately, the entire SAARC region at large. Model SAARC will also provide an opportunity for the next generation of future leaders in SAARC member countries to build strong relationships and enhance mutual understanding of the SAARC region.

Eligibility : Anyone interested in socio-economic issues of the SAARC countries can join in. The age group is 16-20 years. Other terms and conditions are attached in the application form.

Goals :
• To increase the awareness of youth in SAARC member countries about the activities, functioning and the role of SAARC; and its key role in the member countries.

• To develop the awareness of youth participants about the finesse and grandeur of international protocol followed in diplomatic channels.

• To foster the ability of the youth representatives to debate and discuss in a professional manner.

• To promote the exchange of youth ideas, culture, background and their involvement (Youth Exchange).

• To promote a sense of accountability for thinking about the problems of the SAARC region amongst the youth participants, and encourage them to influence their peers to also be involved in social action in their community, country and ultimately, the entire SAARC region.

• To promote inter-cultural learning amongst more youth in SAARC member countries; and ultimately make students and teachers more acquainted with the globalized world.

• Create a positive ripple effect of the outcomes of the project with different types of communities across the SAARC Countries and establish a trend of organizing similar sort- of programs by every member country, in cycle.

Selection Procedure : • A background of some sense of social activism in their community, however small the magnitude of the work might be.

• An ability to speak with confidence about the things that they feel strongly about, including an ability to tackle and deal efficiently with conflicting ideas and views that may arise, without disgrace.

• Effective communicative and inter-personal skills, including fluent English, as this language is going to be the Official Language of the Program.

• Deep knowledge about countries in the SAARC region and the crucial problems that surmounts and inhibits the progress of this region.

• A desire to foster and maintain a closer relationship between themselves and their member country, with other youth SAARC member country representatives.

• A commitment to encourage other young people within their member countries to become more socially active, particularly in the areas of key concern identified by the model SAARC participants.

Important Dates : The Conference starts from 7th August, 2010 and ends on 12th August, 2010. Participants are expected to arrive on 6th August, 2010.
